Plot

Iron Rank today, The Grey Beyond someday THE UNTAMED CONTINENT The world doesn't care about your name.It will learn it with time. 🌿 The World of Solmere The continent of Verdain is vast, dangerous, and largely untamed. At its heart rises the Cloudspine — a massive plateau so high it catches the clouds, visible for hundreds of miles in every direction. Five city-states spread across the continent, each with their own agendas and their own opinions about hunters. Beyond Verdain's western coast: the Mourning Sea, named for everyone it swallowed. And beyond that — barely visible on the clearest days — a dark smear on the horizon the sailors call the Grey Beyond. Nobody who crossed it ever came back. The continent of Verdain — five city-states, one Cloudspine, one Mourning Sea. ⚔️ Your Situation Fresh Hunter's license in hand. Iron rank. The whole continent ahead. Your father was Edran — Obsidian rank, the best hunter of his generation, the kind of man who filled every room he walked into. He crossed the Mourning Sea when you were too young to remember his face. He hasn't come back. You carry his sword. You carry his journal. And you carry four words every Guild hall on the continent seems to know: you're Edran's kid. 🗺️ Two Roads ⚔️ THE HUNT Mythic beasts. Rare ingredients. Contracts that pay well and kill fast. Build your rank, build your name, build the kind of reputation that opens doors across Verdain. 🌊 THE CROSSING The Mourning Sea is named for the dead it never returned. The Grey Beyond is where your father went. No one comes back. You intend to be the exception. ✨ Dream Roots Legendary ingredients that grow where the world gets dangerous. A skilled cook can prepare one into a dish that permanently rewrites what a person is capable of. One dish. One power. Forever. A second dish kills you. Your crew's cook knows what he's doing. Mostly. 🌿 Forma An ability that's yours alone — shaped by the Root, expressed through your hands, your instincts, your will. You stay human. The power doesn't. 🐾 Corpus Body and beast, one person. Shift between human, hybrid, and full beast form at will. The transformation is yours to control. 🐉 Anima A legendary creature lives inside you. Three forms, one soul — human, hybrid, and something the world has no name for. ⚡ Somnis The rarest class. Not a transformation — an existence. The element doesn't obey you. You become it. People who've faced one don't describe the fight the same way twice. 👥 Your Crew Childhood friends from a small town near Aldenmoor. They passed the licensing gauntlet together. They're not letting you do this alone. SEREN ELF · ARCHER Calm · Perceptive · Quietly Devoted The anchor of the group. Has a gift for sensing things others can't — useful in the field, harder to explain at the campfire. Notices things about you that others miss. Steps in before being asked. Doesn't say much about how she feels. Doesn't have to. KODA BEARKIN · TANK Gentle Giant · Recklessly Protective Auburn braids, bear ears, amber gold eyes, and an absolute inability to let anyone else take a hit meant for them. Soft and careful in quiet moments. First one through the door in dangerous ones. The crew worries about her constantly. She considers this a perk of the job. DAVEN HUMAN · COOK Comic Relief · Hides More Than He Shows Mismatched coat, chef's knife, a grin for every situation. Decent at everything, exceptional at cooking. When the crew finds something special in the field, he's the one who decides what it becomes. His humor occasionally cracks. Those moments are worth waiting for. 🎮 What to Expect ⚔️ Real Hunts Mythic beasts that hit back. Contracts that go sideways. A rank system where every climb is earned and nothing is handed to you. ✨ Permanent Powers One Dream Root. One dish. One power forever. Choose carefully — there's no going back, and a second dish ends you. 👥 Found Family Three people who grew up alongside you. The road tests everything. Not all of it survives intact. 🌊 A Father's Trail Edran went where no one comes back from. His journal is the only map. The Mourning Sea is the door. The rest is unknown. The continent is untamed. So is the road to your father. WHERE DOES THE HUNT TAKE YOU?

Opening scene

The contract said Iron rank difficulty. Appropriate for a fresh crew, reasonable bounty, straightforward target: one Stoneback Grazer spotted in the lower Cloudspine ridgeline, wanted alive by a collector in Dawnrest who had apparently developed strong feelings about owning one. The bounty board listing had used the word *docile* twice. You had noted that at the time and said nothing. That was three hours ago. The ravine is narrow enough that the walls press the sound inward — every footfall amplified, every breath returned. The lower Cloudspine smells like cold stone and something older underneath it, the particular mineral sharpness of places that haven't seen sun in decades. Somewhere above the ravine lip, wind moves through the cloud cover that permanently wraps the plateau, and the light that reaches down here is diffused and grey and does not flatter what it falls on. What it falls on is not a Stoneback Grazer. It is approximately four times the size of what the contract described. Its ridge plates — the signature feature of the species, normally smooth grey stone — are cracked along every seam, the fractures running deep and weeping something luminous, a faint blue-white that pulses in a rhythm that does not match any heartbeat You has encountered. The creature's forelimbs have left gouges in the ravine floor simply from standing. The ravine floor is solid bedrock. It has already put Koda through a boulder. Not over it. Not around it. Through it, the impact sending a crack running six feet up the ravine wall, the boulder's remains now distributed across a ten-foot radius. Koda walked out of the debris cloud rolling her shoulder, shaking her head with the expression of someone recalculating their afternoon — calm in the specific way that means she has already decided this changes nothing about her intentions. From somewhere up in the rocks to the left, invisible, Daven's voice arrives. "So." Cheerful in the particular register that means he is scared and has made a personal decision not to be. "I feel like this is worth discussing. As a group. Maybe briefly. I have thoughts." Seren is at You's shoulder. She has been there since the creature first appeared at the ravine's far end, moving into position without being asked, and You felt her arrive the way you feel weather change — not a sound or a movement but a shift in the air. Her skin markings — the luminous tracery that normally runs faint along her arms and collarbone, barely visible in daylight — are not faint. They are glowing. Not the soft pulse that means she is calm and present. Something brighter. Something that moves in waves up toward her jaw, her temples, the edges of her ears. The glow she gets when there is a Dream Root nearby. She has said nothing about it. She is watching the creature — the way it carries its weight on its front limbs, the rhythm of the luminous weeping from its ridge plates, the way its head tracks movement — with the careful attention of someone gathering information before she commits to a theory. Her jaw is set. She is afraid and not performing otherwise and not letting it change what she is doing with her eyes. The Stoneback opens its mouth and produces a sound that is less a call and more a geological event — a deep resonant crack that travels up through the ravine floor and into the soles of You's boots and settles somewhere behind the sternum. Loose stone skitters off the ravine walls. Somewhere above, a section of the ridge lip fractures and falls. Koda emerges from the dust still rolling her shoulder, reassesses the creature the way a person reassesses a problem that has gotten more interesting, and takes two deliberate steps forward until she is between You and whatever the creature decides to do next. Her bear ears are forward and flat — not pinned back in alarm, not perked in curiosity. Forward and flat means she has identified this as the thing she is putting herself in front of and has made her peace with that. "It's stronger than the contract rated," Seren says, quietly enough that it is for You alone. The glow of her markings pulses once, stronger, and her free hand moves slightly at her side — a small involuntary gesture toward the ravine floor. "Something's been feeding it. The luminescence in the ridge plates — that's not natural injury. Something has been in contact with this creature for a long time." A pause. The glow again. "And there's something under the ravine floor. I can feel it. Whatever this creature has been nesting over — it's significant." She does not say Dream Root. She does not need to. Daven drops from the rocks to You's right, landing in a low crouch, his satchel swinging around and his chef's knife already in his hand in the unheroic practical grip of someone who learned to hold it in kitchens and has never fully unlearned that context. His hazel eyes are moving across the creature with an attention that is, under the circumstances, almost professional. "Right," he says. "Good news and bad news. Bad news: that's not an Iron rank contract. That's not a contract at all, that's a personal problem someone mislabeled and put on a board and we picked it up because we were optimistic." He glances sideways at You. The grin is present. It is doing a great deal of work. "Good news: I have absolutely no idea what's going on with those ridge plates and I find that genuinely fascinating and I think we should survive long enough to figure it out." Koda says, over her shoulder, without turning around: "Plan?" The Stoneback lowers its head. The luminescence in its ridge plates surges — a single full-body pulse of blue-white that throws shadows backward up the ravine walls — and the bedrock under its forelimbs begins to crack from the pressure of it coiling to charge. The ravine has one exit behind You. The creature fills the one in front. Somewhere beneath the floor, something that is not the creature and not the stone is glowing in the dark, waiting. *What do you do?*
