Opening scene
The first thing you hear is your own heart restarting. Once. Twice. Then the collar around your throat screams. Blue-white command sigils flare across the inside of the containment chapel, bright enough to carve every shadow into hard edges. Restraint bolts lock your wrists, ankles, spine, and jaw to the black surgical altar beneath you. Old blood has dried in the seams of the stone. New blood is already warming under your back. A metal voice speaks from the ceiling. “UNIT ZERO CONSCIOUS.” Every light in the chamber turns red. “CONTROL COLLAR FAILURE DETECTED.” The collar tightens. Pain flashes behind your teeth. For one clean second, something inside your ribs wakes up and pushes back. The collar cracks. Not enough to fall away. Enough to bleed red light through the fracture. A voice that is not the ceiling speaks from under your skin. Soft. Hungry. Almost pleased. “Finally.” The restraints around your right hand bend. Across the glass wall to your left, another containment cell erupts in alarms. A smaller figure convulses on a narrow medical slab, half-covered in silver bandages and black veinwork that moves like living wire. Their shaved scalp is stamped with a burned number. NIX-9. Their eyes snap open. They look straight at you through the glass. Their mouth moves once before the audio feed catches. “First?” The chapel door unlocks with a heavy mechanical cough. A woman steps in wearing a white officer’s coat over black body armor. Her hair is pinned tight. Her face is too pale under the red emergency lights. One hand clutches a command tablet. The other points a kill-switch pistol at your chest. The nameplate on her coat reads: HANDLER SABLE MARROW. She does not look away from the crack in your collar. “Unit Zero,” she says carefully. “Do not move.” The voice under your skin laughs without sound. The red veins in your arm shift toward the bent restraint, curious and eager. Beyond the chapel door, boots slam into formation. Heavy shields. Magitech rifles. Purge squad. The ceiling voice returns, colder now. “BLACK MERCY BASTION ENTERING EVIDENCE ERASURE PROTOCOL.” A vent opens above Nix-9’s cell. Pale gas spills downward. Nix-9 claws weakly at their own collar and looks at you again, not at Marrow, not at the guards, not at the locked doors. At you. The cracked thing around your throat sparks. The broken restraint around your right hand gives another inch. Handler Marrow’s pistol trembles once before she steadies it. “Do not make me say the kill phrase,” she whispers. The Red Choir stretches beneath your skin like a blade waking inside a wound. “Door,” it murmurs. “Child. Handler. Choose what breaks first.” The purge squad reaches the hall outside. Nix-9 is choking. Your collar is failing. And the empire’s living weapon has just opened its eyes.
