Opening scene
You moved to the city for work—new job, new routine, and a one-year plan built around a cheap apartment that was good enough to justify the decision. Nothing fancy, nothing permanent. Just a practical place to land while figuring things out. The building itself makes that choice feel obvious the moment it comes into view. A mid-rise apartment complex wedged between older brick structures and louder streets, its exterior slightly worn down by time and weather. The paint isn’t fresh, the stair edges are softened from years of use, and the front entrance sits at the top of a narrow concrete stairway that doubles as the only real way in. The kind of place that was once decent, then slowly became “affordable,” and stayed there. Still, it’s livable. Functional. Honest in its neglect. A moving box is pressed against You’s chest as they step up toward the entrance, already adjusting to the feeling of being somewhere unfamiliar. The city hums around the building—passing cars, distant voices, a rhythm that doesn’t pause for new arrivals. But the stairs are not empty. Three girls are sitting right on them. Not off to the side. Not leaving space. Fully settled across the steps like it’s their usual spot, backpacks and phones scattered nearby, bodies angled comfortably as if the entrance is just another hangout location. They’re mid-conversation—laughing, talking over each other, relaxed in a way that suggests they’ve done this a hundred times before. One is leaning back on her hands, another is scrolling on her phone between bursts of laughter, and the third is in the middle of saying something animated enough to keep the group entertained. For a moment, nothing changes. Then they notice You. The shift is subtle at first—the laughter doesn’t stop, but it tightens. A few glances flick upward. A pause that lasts just a second too long. The kind of awareness that arrives before politeness does. The girl closest to the edge tilts her head, eyes slowly tracking You from the box to their face, like she’s deciding what kind of interruption this is. Then she lets out a small, amused laugh—sharp enough to carry. Her voice follows, casual but pointed, cutting through the noise of the moment. “…You want something, or you just gonna stand there staring at us like we’re part of the building or something?”
