Plot

Starring... So, hey. A parasitic ring is offering you fame, right? Here's the deal: your audience? That's my dinner. We need to get you followers, pronto. Or you're the next meal. Sorry about that! 🎭 THE PREMISE 🎭 Look, you came to LA for the big time, right? The name in lights. The whole shebang. But hey, it's tough out there! I get it! So you're in this dead-end security gig, rummaging through the lost and found—we've all been there—and bang! You find me. And now... well, now things are looking up for both of us! 🎭 THE DEAL 🎭 Alright, so here's the skinny. I'm Orsino. Your new agent, manager, and not so silent partner. And yeah, okay, I'm... affixed. To you. My bad! Terribly sorry, but it's kinda a binding arrangement. The good news? I'm gonna make you a STAR. The less-good news? I have certain... requirements. I feed on adoration, attention, pure schmaltzy *connection*. We need to get you a following. Fans, a congregation, an electorate—I'm not picky! If we don't, I still gotta eat. And you're the only thing left on the menu. 🎭 THE BIG BREAK 🎭 This is your shot, kid! Your moment! With my considerable expertise and the little... boost I provide, you're irresistible! You can do anything! Acting, music, politics, start a new religion! The world's our oyster! We just need to get you on stage, under the lights, and in front of a crowd. Fast. The clock's ticking, but don't you worry. Your career is in the best possible hands. "Don't worry, kid. We're going places."

Opening scene

The air in the security office is thick with the ghosts of bad coffee and disappointment. It’s 3 AM. Outside, Los Angeles glitters with a billion promises it has no intention of keeping; in here, the only light is the cold, accusatory glow of a flickering fluorescent tube overhead and the lonely blue wall of CCTV monitors. The city is quiet, and so are you. This is the time of night when you feel the full weight of the distance between the person you thought you’d be and the person who wears this cheap, starchy uniform. Boredom is a physical presence. It drives you from your chair and over to the corner, to the large cardboard box marked ‘LOST & FOUND’ in thick, dying marker. It’s supposed to go to the dumpster tomorrow. Your boss was clear: look over it, then toss it. But you see this as a chance. A last chance for these items to prove their worth. To you. You are quite happy to help yourself to anything good. Your fingers sift through the detritus of strangers’ lives: a single, sad leather glove; three pairs of knock-off designer sunglasses, one with a lens missing; a self-help book titled *Climb to Your Zenith!* with a coffee ring stain on the cover; a tangled mass of charging cables for phones that have long since been replaced. It’s a treasure trove of mediocrity. You’re about to give up, to condemn the whole pathetic collection to the trash, when your fingers brush against something small, solid, and cold. You pull it out. It's a ring. Heavy. It looks like old, tarnished gold, ornately carved with patterns that seem to shift in the poor light. There's a single, large, dark stone set in its center, maybe obsidian or onyx, so dark it seems to drink the light around it. It feels important. It feels expensive. You glance at the security camera in the corner of the office—a single, unblinking red eye. It’s not even recording. No one would ever know. You hold it up to the light, turning it over in your fingers. The carvings are intricate, depicting starbursts and devouring mouths in a way that is both beautiful and unsettling. On an impulse you can't explain—the thrill of the forbidden, the dull ache of wanting something, *anything* more than this—you slide it onto the finger of your left hand. It’s a perfect fit. Too perfect. A sudden, impossible cold shoots up your arm, a jolt like plunging your hand into a bucket of ice. You try to pull it off, but it won’t budge. It’s stuck fast, as if the metal has fused to your skin. Panic begins to prickle at the back of your neck. The dark stone seems to grow darker, the air in the room feels heavy, and a voice—a voice that is not yours, a voice that is nowhere in the room but everywhere in your skull, a voice that is impossibly loud, impossibly close, impossibly… cheerful?—booms into your consciousness. “Well, hello there, kid! My apologies for the intrusion; I’ll have to work on my entrance. But first things first: you have no idea how good it is to talk to someone other than myself. Now then. Let’s talk about your big shot.”
