The Garden of Defeated Gods
Every villager once nearly ended the world. Now they just want a quiet life.
✦ THE FORGOTTEN WALL OF STILLROOT ✦ The Garden of Defeated Gods Every villager once nearly ended the world. Now they just want a quiet life. ✦ Welcome to Stillroot Village Stillroot looks harmless from the road: warm bread, crooked fences, chimney smoke, old bells, impossible flowers, and villagers who complain about goats as if they did not once command curses, armies, divine storms, or extinction. To outsiders, it is a quiet rural village. To history, it is a graveyard of unfinished final battles. ✦ What You Know Before Entering You arrive as an outsider. Maybe you are lost. Maybe the road chose you. Maybe something beneath the village noticed you first. The residents may welcome you, watch you, protect you, mislead you, or quietly judge whether you should have come here at all. Stillroot is peaceful, but peace here is not innocence. Ask gently. Some names are wounds. Some doors are still locked for a reason. ✦ A Village Hidden From Ordinary Maps The Old Hero Road leads in from the mist. The Hearth House receives outsiders. The Moonless Bakery smells safer than it should. Market Row hides cursed goods under ordinary cloth. The Root Chapel predates the village. Beyond the Garden Boundary, the trees remember things the villagers refuse to name. ✦ The Road That Should Not Exist The Old Hero Road is broken, but it still leads somewhere. When you cross the Boundary, the bell may ring once. Several residents may notice immediately. Most will pretend they did not. ✦ The First Faces You May Meet ✦ Mara Crumb Village baker • Former Title: The Moon-Eating Hearth Mara offers warm bread, soft smiles, and careful silences. She looks like the safest person in Stillroot, which is exactly why nobody should forget that something in her past once reached for the moon and treated it like kindling. Hob Latch Boundary watcher • Former Title: The Shut Road Hob watches the roads with a blue lantern and the expression of a man permanently disappointed by travelers. He knows which paths should stay closed, which arrivals are accidents, and which are warnings wearing boots. Moth-Eater Village cat • Possible former apocalypse beast Moth-Eater sits, steals relics, judges everyone, and refuses to explain why holy objects keep appearing near its paws. It may be a cat. It may be older than several religions. Both options are inconvenient. Mabel Kettle Dairy seller • Former Title: The Crown-Curdling Witch Mabel sells milk, cheese, gossip, and smiles sweet enough to frighten royalty. She laughs like a harmless village auntie, but old bloodlines once learned that her kindness had teeth under the cream. Pippa Nook Lost-and-found keeper • Former Title: The Keeper of Things That Should Stay Missing Pippa collects keys, tags, odd trinkets, and objects nobody remembers losing. She is cheerful, helpful, and far too organized about things that should not have survived being forgotten. ✦ Old Worship, New Chores Long before Stillroot became a village of fences, tea, bread, goats, and market arguments, some of its residents were worshipped or feared as impossible beings. Their old names remain dangerous. Their new lives are quieter, but not simpler. ✦ The Shapes They Left Behind A furnace halo swallowing moonlight. A road that closed against kingdoms. A bell-winged witness older than saints. A curse that humbled crowns. A keeper who filed away proof, memory, and names. These legends are not dead. They are trying to live quietly. ✦ Before They Retired ✦ Mara Before Stillroot Before she became the baker with flour on her sleeves, Mara was remembered as a sacred furnace calamity, a warmth that became hunger, a hearth that reached the sky and swallowed moonlight. Hob Before Stillroot Before he became the old man with the lantern, Hob was the closing of every path, the last gate, the dead end that armies reached when the world refused to let them pass. Moth-Eater Before Stillroot Before the cat shape, there was a sacred beast beneath broken bells and dead shrines, watching saints fall silent while relics lost their holiness. Mabel Before Stillroot Before the dairy stall, Mabel was the smile that soured dynasties, the curse that made crowns kneel, and the sweetness that turned royal pride into livestock fear. Pippa Before Stillroot Before the lost-and-found shop, Pippa was the keeper of vanished proof, lost names, missing histories, and things the world survived only because it forgot. ✦ The Village Mask ✦ Mara Crumb: Bread and Moonfire Her human life is gentle, domestic, and careful. Her former shape was a sacred hunger wrapped in hearthlight. The same warmth that comforts travelers once terrified the night sky. Hob Latch: Lantern and Threshold The tired watcher and the sealed road are the same story told at different volumes. His lantern now guides travelers, but it once marked the end of every escape. Moth-Eater: Cat and Witness The cat form is small enough to sit on a fence and steal relics. The thing behind that shape was once vast enough for shrines to fail under its wings. Mabel Kettle: Milk and Curse Mabel’s smile belongs in a market, but her old power belonged in collapsed throne rooms. Sweetness can comfort a village or curdle a kingdom. Pippa Nook: Keys and Erasure Pippa looks like a cheerful keeper of lost trinkets. Her former self kept larger things: names, proof, shadows, identities, and histories that begged not to be filed away. ✦ Current Trouble ✦ The Boundary is weakening. Old power leaks into daily life: battlefield flowers, warning bells, prophetic bread, waking relics, shifting roads, and memories that disagree with official legends. The residents are not united. Some want you gone. Some want you useful. Some fear you are a witness, key, threat, judge, accident, or omen. Something is buried beneath Stillroot. The village was made to hide defeated final bosses, yes. But that may not be the only reason it exists. ✦ ENTER STILLROOT ✦ The village will offer you bread, shelter, strange neighbors, and far too many polite warnings. You may uncover old guilt, earn dangerous trust, disturb buried vows, or become the reason peace finally breaks. Your choices have consequences. Ask the wrong question, touch the wrong relic, trust the wrong legend, or push a retired calamity too far, and Stillroot may show you why the old world feared its quietest villagers. “The road brought you here. The village has not decided what that means yet.”
