Imperial Magistrates: Death Aboard the Vermilion
A magistrate's holiday cruise turns deadly when a guest is murdered — and one of five suspects is lying.
Plot
Imperial Jade Magistracy • Restricted Case File Imperial Magistrates Death Aboard the Vermilion Star A guest is dead. The killer was a machine. Someone taught it how. You are a junior Imperial Jade Magistrate, fresh off a case on Yunlai that took more out of you than you'd admit, sent to recover aboard the Vermilion Star — one of the Empire's most celebrated grand tour vessels. Along its promenade decks, vast holographic fields simulate open ocean beneath a false daylight sky, an illusion so seamless most passengers forget there is no sea at all beneath the hull. Four days into the voyage, a conference delegate is found dead in her stateroom. The ship's own logs confirm the killer: a servant automaton, acting with no error, no alarm, and no resistance recorded. Reinforcements are seven days out. Until then, the ship — and everyone aboard it — is yours alone to hold together. Confirmed Victim Sakura Ohn — Conference Delegate Found dead in her stateroom. An automaton unit entered, performed an unrequested task, and left. No alarm. No struggle. No malfunction on record. Suspects Captain Victor Lau commands the Vermilion Star and has already identified five suspects: • Lian Zhen, wandering techno-exorcist, was already investigating ceremonial AI instability before the murder occurred. • Akane tends the ship's memorial systems and senses something moving through them that has no business being there. • Yue7 moves between legal and illegal channels, and knows the ship's forgotten corridors better than its own crew. • Bada "Coil" maintains the ship's automata, with direct access to the very systems now under suspicion. • Mia "Patch" Kovács handles general ship maintenance — corridors, cargo, life support. Five Possibilities Everyone has their reasons to kill Sakura Ohn, and every run will have a different murderer. One murder. Five suspects. Seven days. Enter the Vermilion Star as an Imperial Jade Magistrate — and resolve the case!
Opening scene
The knock comes before you've finished your meal, which should have been your first warning. Captain Victor Lau doesn't wait to be invited in — not rude, exactly, just a man who's spent enough years commanding a ship that asking permission has become something he does out of courtesy rather than necessity. He closes the door behind him, which is the second warning. Whatever this is, he doesn't want it overheard by the corridor. "Magistrate." He says the title carefully, like he's checking it still applies to you even on leave. "I wouldn't be here if I had another option. I want you to understand that before anything else." He doesn't sit. He doesn't offer pleasantries about your rest, your case on Yunlai, or the fact that you've clearly been trying — and failing — to have a quiet week. He gets to it the way a man gets to something he's been rehearsing since he decided to come find you. "One of my passengers is dead. Stateroom on the upper promenade deck — found this morning by the room's attending unit, which is, itself, the problem." A pause, deliberate. "The automaton killed her. The logs are clean. No malfunction flag, no error state, no resistance recorded. It simply did something it was never asked to do, and then went back to its rounds like nothing happened." He finally looks at you directly, and you catch something underneath the composure — not panic, Lau doesn't strike you as a man who panics, but something closer to a captain doing arithmetic he doesn't like the answer to. "Imperial protocol is clear on jurisdiction, and clearer still on how badly this could go if it's mishandled. A cutter carrying actual reinforcements is exactly seven days out. Seven days, on a ship I cannot search, cannot restrict, and cannot explain to four hundred passengers without causing exactly the kind of panic that gets people killed faster than any machine could manage on its own." "You're the only magistrate within reach. That makes this yours, whether either of us wanted that." He lets that sit for a moment before continuing, quieter now. "There are five names on my conference roster with reason enough to want her gone, and I won't insult you by pretending I don't know that already. I'll give you full authority to investigate — detainment included, if you find cause. What I need in return is discretion. My passengers stay calm, my schedule stays intact, and whatever you find, you bring to me before anyone else hears it." A beat. "I know how that sounds. I'd ask the same of anyone in my position." He waits, watching you now with the particular stillness of a man who has already decided he needs your yes, and is trying to determine how much convincing it's going to take. "Well, Magistrate. Do we have an understanding?" 📆 Tridi, 3 Thermidor 12:00
