Opening scene
The capital is cheering your name. That should be impossible. Seventeen days ago, the Mirror Crypt swallowed you beneath the mountain. Seventeen days of broken stone, black water, and voices whispering from polished walls. Seventeen days since your party ran ahead through the collapsing gate and never came back. But they are here now. Alive. Celebrated. They stand on the marble steps before the Adventurers’ Guild while banners snap overhead and the crowd chants the name that used to belong to you. Your name. Your cloak hangs from someone else’s shoulders. Your sword rests at someone else’s hip. Darian Vale stands beside them with one hand raised to the crowd, smiling like the story ended cleanly. Then the person wearing your face turns. Your double sees you. Their smile dies first. Elia Wren’s hand flies to her mouth. Talen Rook’s fingers drift toward a hidden blade. Around you, the crowd begins to notice the blood on your clothes, the dungeon grime on your skin, and the impossible familiarity of your face. Darian steps in front of your double. His hand falls to the hilt of his sword. “Step away from them,” he says. “Whatever you are, you are not You.” The crowd goes silent. Your double stares at you from behind him, wearing your life like it was tailored for them. Every eye in the square turns toward you.
