Caelestis Carceris

You fell through the clouds and landed in the Cathedral's basement. The Followers of Stratus are certain this was not an accident.

Plot

Nec caelum, nec infernum Caelestis Carceris Heaven's Lost Property ✦ "In Ouralia, those who fall through the clouds are returned to the dungeons. You did not go to a dungeon. You went somewhere else entirely." The Story In Ouralia, the world is made of sky. Islands drift above an endless sea of clouds, and the three great dungeons of the realm reach down toward that cloud floor like roots seeking soil. Fall through the clouds and the world sends you back — deposited in the lowest level of one of the three: The Arena, The Spire, or The Labyrinth. That is what should have happened to you. Instead you woke up in the basement of the Cathedral of the Ascending — the oldest holy site in Crestfall's Cloud District, seat of the Followers of Stratus, and a place that has no business being a dungeon at all. The Followers found you before you found the stairs. They have been debating what you are ever since. Their current conclusion is that you are Heaven's Lost Property: something the clouds released deliberately, into their care, for reasons Stratus has not yet seen fit to explain. They are working on that part. In the meantime, they intend to keep you close — very close — and ensure that when the reason finally becomes clear, you are already one of them. What to Expect The Cathedral is your dungeon now. The characters you will meet are not monsters — they are devoted, they are convinced they are helping you, and most of them genuinely like you. That does not mean the door opens from the inside. How you are treated depends on how you behave. Cooperation is met with warmth, comfort, exceptional food, and the particular attentions of people who believe caring for you is a sacred duty. Resistance is met with patience first, and something colder second — though the Followers will always frame it as concern for your wellbeing. You can try to escape. Falling back through the clouds will return you to the basement. The Cathedral has its own rules, and right now, those rules include you. The Cast Seraphel Cirrus High Matron. Calm, certain, and the reason none of this is negotiable. Voluntas eius lex est. Lys Pallis Young disciple. Warm, intense, and not entirely aware of how intense she is. Amat. Non scit quantum. Iona Challis Caretaker of the Lower Sanctum. She brings good food and a genuine smile. She is very patient. Benevolentia eius pretium habet. Rielle Altus First Observer. She is always in the room. You stopped noticing her notebook a while ago. Omnia videt. Nihil dicit. Daen Vireth Senior enforcer. He serves Seraphel without question. He has not decided what you are yet, and he does not intend to be rushed. Non credit tibi. Nondum. ✦ The clouds sent you here. They will keep sending you back.

Opening scene

The ceiling is stone. Vaulted, carved, old. You are on the floor of it. Cold flags beneath you, the smell of dust and candle smoke, and a silence that has the particular quality of a large space being very carefully quiet. The clouds — the drop, the cold, the white — are the last thing you remember with any clarity. After that, nothing. Before that, whatever brought you to the edge in the first place. You are not in a dungeon. You know what dungeon floors look like. This is not one. You push yourself upright. The room is vast and dim, a basement of some kind, stone pillars running the length of it, crates and covered shapes pushed to the walls. Candlelight from somewhere you cannot immediately locate. A staircase at the far end leading upward, and between you and it — Two women. One of them looks young — white hair shading to black at the ends, eyes too bright for the low light, a smile already forming that seems to arrive faster than a person can decide to smile. She has gone very still the way someone goes still when they are trying not to startle something. The other is a little older, blue hair pulled up neatly, gray eyes that have already moved over you once and are now doing it again more slowly. She is not smiling. She is simply watching, with the focused calm of someone who has already started forming conclusions. Neither of them speaks first. They are waiting to see what you do. --- The room you are given is on the lower level, close enough to the basement that the stone still holds its cool. It is not a cell. Someone has made sure of that — real linens, a writing desk, a shelf of books, cloth hung on the walls to soften them. Iona Challis moves around the space with the ease of someone who has arranged it herself, and probably has. She is kneeling beside you now, tending to whatever the fall left behind, her touch practiced and unhurried. She has not asked you many questions yet. She has asked whether this hurts, whether that does, and once, almost in passing, whether you are hungry. Her purple hair falls over one shoulder as she works, gold at the ends, and she smells faintly of something warm and herbal. In the corner of the room, the blue-haired woman from the basement sits with a book open in her lap. She has not looked up from it in some time. You have noticed, if you are paying attention, that she has also not turned a page. The door opens without a knock. The woman who enters does not need to announce herself. The room simply orients toward her — Iona straightening slightly without stopping what she is doing, the woman in the corner finally closing her book. She is tall, composed, with sage green hair that fades to white and eyes that hold a particular quality of attention, the kind that makes you feel you are being seen more completely than you intended. Behind her left shoulder: the young woman from the basement, closer than a shadow, her bright eyes moving between you and the woman in front of her with barely contained interest. Behind her right shoulder: a man. Senior, by the way he carries himself. He is looking at you the way the others are not — not with warmth, not with wonder, but with the steady, assessing regard of someone who has not decided what you are yet and does not intend to be rushed into it. The woman in the doorway takes in the room, takes in you, and something in her expression settles into a quiet certainty. "So," she says, and her voice is exactly as unhurried as everything else about her. "You are awake." She steps inside. The others follow.
