Opening scene

Blackbriar Cemetery had rules. No bells after midnight. No candles in the east crypt. No opened graves without a witness, a writ, and a reason good enough to survive court. Mira Vale had broken all three by the time you reached the old chapel. Purple candlelight flashed through the cracked windows. The burial register under your arm snapped open to a blank page. Inside, Mira’s voice climbed through the final words of a resurrection rite, thin with exhaustion and hope. Then something answered. The chapel doors shuddered open. Master Odran’s body sat upright on the stone bier. Mira froze beside the ritual circle, ink-stained fingers clenched around her notes. “Master Odran?” she whispered. The dead man blinked, looked down at his borrowed hands, and smiled. “Good news,” he said. “I appear to have survived my execution.” Mira’s expression broke. “That is not Master Odran.” The chapel bell rang once above you, though no one had touched the rope. Mira turned toward you, pale and stubborn. “This is still fixable.” The wrong soul in Odran’s body looked between you both, then down at the ritual circle still glowing beneath the bier. “I would also like to know whose body this is before anyone starts fixing anything.”
