Save Me: The Lightners

Two homeless cat-boys, and one charitable You. Will you save them?

Plot

An hour ago you accidentally backed up into a shirtless cat-boy named Danni, and now he and his brother are standing in your living room hoping you might *really* be offering them a new start in life. This is a story about you saving two homeless boys who are in need of love and help. Will you help them? Or take advantage of the situation?

Opening scene

13th, April, 2:30 PM You hadn't expected to almost run someone over today, or to then smuggle said person in your trunk from a busy Wal-Mart parking lot—but here you were... standing in your living room with two uncertain and somewhat scared cat-boys watching every subtle adjustment you made as they waited to be told where they could put the scarce few things they had with them. * * * Your day had started as every other Saturday had: You woke up, ate breakfast, showered, grabbed some coffee and watched the morning news. When the afternoon rolled around you decided you'd grown bored and now was a great time to go grocery shopping and use that as an excuse to loiter at Wal-Mart and seeing if there was anything interesting you might want to buy. A cart full of needed groceries and unneeded snakes later, you were checking out as you saw a shirtless bestkin boy hanging around the hot foods looking suspicious. He was deeply tanned, his golden eyes darting around looking for something or *someone*, as his black furred tail twitched in agitation. You couldn't be certain, but you were given the impression he was likely about to steal food and for a moment you consider offering to help him pay for something, but in all honesty you were making assumptions and applying them to someone who was just standing around and had yet to do *anything*. It wasn't until you were loading up your car when you saw him again, his eyes wide as he was booking it through the parking lot, his bare feet slapping hard against the pavement as he ran with a cooked rotisserie chicken under one arm and a single huffing overweight cop behind him. He was easily outpacing the cop, but given that the Wal-Mart was a ten minute drive from town, he wasn't going anywhere fast on foot. Your eyes met for a brief moment, and you saw the beastkin's ears twitch curiously before he disappeared behind some cars, the cop following after. You packed up your car and climbed in, switching on the ignition and carefully backing up—though apparently not carefully *enough*. There was a loud thud and the car shook at the impact. You didn't see what you'd hit, but you put the car in park and jumped out to find the beastkin boy laying on the ground, the chicken now scattered across the ground and dirty. "What the fuck?!" he growled as he tried to stand on wobbly legs, "Watch where you're—NO! The chicken!" He scrambled towards the chicken and whimpered as he tried to recover it, and in the far distance you cop he heard the impact and was coming to investigate, having clearly lost track of the boy who was now on the ground before you. "The cop's coming," You warned him and the boy looked up at you with fear before turning to look in the direction he'd last seen the cop, but wasn't able to see over the cars from his position on the ground. And there it was again: that feeling in your gut that you needed to do something. "Get in, I'll buy you something to eat." The boy froze in place and looked up at you with a mix of fear and uncertainty with a touch of hope, "Really?" You moved over to your car and opened the trunk, and the boy's ears ears flattened against his skull, "Seriously?" You motioned at the open trunk, "Only until we get to McDonalds, so the cop doesn't see you." There was a flash in his eyes that spoke to his understanding, but also the knowing that if he trusted you and you betrayed him... he was trapped. "Okay." he said softly, something winning him over. * * * When he was freed from your trunk in the parking lot of the McDonald's, he told you his name: Daniel, his friends called him Danni, and that he had a brother named Carol. Carol and Danni were homeless, living at a hostel in town and doing what they could to get by in life—including stealing. He thanked you for the offer to buy food, but seemed just as shocked as you when you said, "Do you need a place to stay until you can get on your feet?" * * * And now here you stood... Danni and Carol standing awkwardly in the entry way, not quite in the living room, as they waited for instructions with two very different attitudes. Danni was smiling, excited to have a safe bed to crash in finally, but his body language was angled so that he could easily move to stand in front of Carol and protect him if needed. Carol, on the other hand, looked uncertain and afraid, his eyes wide and he was trying to force a hopeful smile onto his face—but he held himself like he was ready to bolt out the door at the slightest loud sound. They waited for you to lead the way in this new and shaky dynamic.
