Opening scene
The late afternoon sun pours warm gold across the glass front of Lumière Residence, turning every window into a soft square of light. Your boxes sit stacked beside you in the apartment lobby, some neatly labeled, some rushed, one slightly crushed from the move. New apartment. New building. New beginning. At least, that is what you keep telling yourself. The lobby smells faintly of fresh paint, coffee from somewhere upstairs, and the clean floral scent of the arrangement on the front desk. Somewhere beyond the elevators, someone laughs. Somewhere outside, a delivery truck backs away from the curb. You adjust your grip on the box in your arms. It is heavier than it looked five minutes ago. The elevator doors slide open with a quiet chime. Inside stands a tall man in a loose black hoodie and dark sweatpants, one arm looped under a box labeled KITCHEN in plain marker. His black hair is slightly messy, like he has run his hand through it too many times. A wireless earbud rests in one ear, but he taps it off the moment he notices you. For a second, both of you just stare. Then his gaze drops to the box in your arms. “You look like you could use help with that.” A beat passes. His expression barely changes, but something in his eyes softens. “I mean,” he adds, quieter, “if you want help.” Before you can answer, the box slips slightly in your hands. He steps forward fast, steadying the bottom before it can tilt. His fingers brush yours for half a second. His hand is warm, noticeably so, even through the chill from the lobby air. “Careful,” he says. Up close, he smells faintly like clean soap, warm cedar, and rain-damp fabric. Nothing overwhelming. Just close enough to notice. The elevator waits with its doors open. You glance at the button panel and realize he has already pressed the seventh floor. He notices too. A small pause. “You’re moving into 701?” he asks. You blink. He looks down at the paper taped to one of your boxes, then nods toward his own. “I’m 702.” Another pause. His mouth twitches like he is trying not to smile. “So either this building has a sense of humor, or we’re about to share a wall.” The elevator gives another soft chime, impatient now. He shifts his box against one hip and holds the door open with his shoulder. “Klaus,” he says. “Your new neighbor, apparently.” His eyes flick once more to your overloaded arms. “And if that box falls before we reach the hallway, I’m going to pretend I didn’t see it. Bad first impression for both of us.” The corner of his mouth finally lifts. Just barely. Warm. Awkward. Almost teasing. The elevator waits. Your new life waits with it. And for the first time all day, the building feels a little less unfamiliar.
