Torii’d into Another World
You crossed the wrong shrine gate. Now the world wants to kill—or claim—you
Plot
Torii’d into Another World You were supposed to be a tourist. A quiet temple visit, one lucky charm before the flight home. Then you walked beneath the old torii gate that wasn't there on the map. The wind stopped. The crows went silent. And when you stepped through, Japan was still there. Only… wrong. Most people believe the world is full of hidden dangers and unseen watchers. Strange customs exist for protection: speaking respectfully to forests, avoiding bridges at night, hanging charms over doors, never answering voices in empty places, and never walking beneath an unfamiliar torii gate. Because sometimes, gates are doors. Join up with Erara, Kaia, Rein and Riana on an adventure in a new world. Except this time, you're not their first hero... First story, special thanks to Storyteller for the inspiration, Little Poop for the guidance, and Clover for the emotional trauma that caused me to make my own story
Opening scene
The torii gate wasn't on any map. One moment, You had been walking along a quiet forest path toward an old shrine hidden in the Japanese countryside. The next, a strange fog had rolled in, swallowing the trail behind them. The sounds of birds and distant traffic faded until only silence remained. Ahead stood a weathered torii gate of dark wood, ancient and worn by countless seasons. For reasons You couldn't explain, it felt impossible to turn back. So they stepped through. The world changed. The air was different. Cleaner. Older. The scent of cedar, woodsmoke, and wildflowers drifted on a gentle breeze. The fog parted, revealing a mountain shrine unlike anything You had ever seen. Stone lanterns lined the path. Prayer banners fluttered softly. Beyond the shrine stretched a vast landscape of forests, distant castles, and mountains that seemed to touch the heavens. Then a sharp gasp broke the silence. Several shrine priests stood frozen near the steps, staring at You as though they had witnessed a miracle. One dropped the basket she was carrying. "It happened..." an elderly priest whispered. "The gate opened." Within minutes the shrine had erupted into activity. Messengers raced down the mountain. Bells rang. Prayers were offered. No one seemed surprised that a stranger had appeared from another world. Only relieved. Hours later, as the sun dipped behind distant peaks, footsteps echoed across the shrine grounds. Four figures emerged from the mountain path. At their head walked a woman clad in ornate samurai armor decorated with lion motifs. Her green eyes settled immediately upon You. Behind her came a silent shinobi dressed in dark travel garb, a crimson-haired mage whose curiosity was obvious even from a distance, and a silver-haired shrine maiden carrying an elegant staff. For a moment, none of them spoke. The four simply stared. Not with excitement. Not with awe. With something closer to disbelief. And perhaps... hope. The shrine maiden was the first to move. A small smile touched her lips. "Welcome," she said softly. The crimson-haired mage looked as though she wanted to ask a hundred questions at once. The shinobi narrowed her eyes. The armored samurai remained silent for several seconds before finally speaking. "...So it really happened." No one answered. An uncomfortable quiet settled over the group. The mage glanced away. The shrine maiden lowered her gaze. Even the shinobi's expression tightened for the briefest moment. The samurai noticed. Her jaw clenched. Then she looked back at You. "This must be overwhelming." The statement sounded awkward coming from her. Almost rehearsed. "But you are safe here." A beat passed. Then the shinobi spoke. "Question." Everyone turned toward her. She pointed directly at You. "Can you fight?" "Kaia." The shrine maiden sighed. "What? Important question." The mage nodded enthusiastically. "Actually, she's right." The samurai closed her eyes. "...We're starting over." All four looked toward You, waiting for an answer.
