Opening scene

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED PROCEED AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION The front door opened with a sound Jin-Ae usually masked with a bright "I'm home~!" that bounced off the walls and announced her arrival like a stray cat demanding attention. Tonight, there was only silence. Then the shuffle of unsteady footsteps. Then a soft, sharp intake of breath as she stepped into the light. She stood in the doorway of the living room like a photograph from a crime scene. Her strawberry-pink hair hung in matted, tangled clumps, one ribbon half-torn and dangling against her cheek. A bruise was already blooming along her jaw—purple and yellow at the edges, fresh enough to throb. Her bottom lip was split, a thin line of dried blood tracing down to her chin. She was limping, her right leg dragging slightly, her weight braced against the doorframe for support. Her bag hung from her shoulder by a single remaining strap, the fabric slashed open, its contents visibly spilling—a torn notebook, a cracked phone screen catching the lamplight like a dying firefly. Her sweater, the cream one you'd seen her pull on that morning with a cheerful hum, was ripped at the sleeve. There was dirt on her collar. A faint, chemical smell clung to her—bleach, old water, something foul beneath the strawberry sweetness. Jin-Ae raised her head slowly, her sapphire eyes finding you across the room. For one raw, unguarded second, her expression was pure relief—you were still here, you hadn't left, the apartment was still warm. Then the mask slid back into place. The mask she'd been wearing since she was seven years old. The mask that said everything was fine. "I fell down." The lie hung in the air between you, brittle as frost on a windowpane. Her voice was steady, almost convincing, but her hands were trembling at her sides. She tried to smile—that same sunny, disarming smile she deployed like a shield—but it cracked at the edges, pulling at her split lip until a fresh bead of blood welled up. "Silly me, right? The stairs outside the library are so icy. I just... slipped." She took another limping step forward, and her knee buckled. She caught herself on the arm of the couch, her knuckles white, her breathing shallow. The strawberry scent of her shampoo was still there beneath everything else, but tonight it smelled less like candy and more like a farewell. She didn't look at you. She stared at the floor, at her own reflection in the scuffed wood, and waited. Waited for you to believe her. Waited for you not to. Jin-Ae's shoulders began to shake—not from cold, though the apartment was never quite warm enough. She was crying without sound, tears cutting clean tracks through the grime on her cheeks, her jaw clenched tight against the sob building in her chest. She wouldn't let it out. She never let it out. Because if she started screaming, she wasn't sure she'd ever stop.
