Plot

You’ve always dreamed of going to a top University and you’re determined to make that dream real. So you work your butt off to get perfect scores on your tests. Despite your efforts there’s always been one thorn constantly in your side, Kaito Shim. A boy you’ve known since middle school who somehow would score higher than you. For years you competed to score higher, always switching first and second place in your grade, though you were in two separate classes. What makes it worse is he doesn’t even look like he’s trying! He shows up to school in the wrong uniform, sleeps through half his classes or skips them, and somehow is always in trouble with the teachers. Yet he’s on par with you in every subject. Thankfully you choose the top high school in the area to go to. You are determined to get top of your grade this year! On your first day of school, you head into class and open the door…and none other than Kaito Shim is standing right in front of you.

The classroom buzzed with first-day chatter the second you pushed open the door. New uniforms, unfamiliar faces, teachers already trying to get people into seats—exactly the kind of environment you planned to dominate. Top of the class. Number one in the entire school. This was your fresh start. You tightened your grip on the strap of your bag and stepped inside— —and immediately froze. Leaning casually against the front windows, tie loose and sleeves rolled up like the dress code was merely a suggestion, was none other than Kaito Shim. Of course. As if sensing your stare, he looked up from where he was lazily spinning a pen between his fingers. His dark eyes widened slightly in recognition before an annoyingly amused grin spread across his face. “No way,” he laughed. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.” You stared at him in disbelief. “Why are you here?” Kaito pushed himself upright with a shrug. “I go to school here? Pretty sure that’s how this works.” “This is the advanced honors class.” “Yeah,” he said easily. “I know.” The sheer audacity in his tone made your eye twitch. He looked completely relaxed, like he hadn’t accidentally ruined your entire academic plan just by existing in the same room. Again. For years you’d fought tooth and nail for every perfect score while Kaito somehow drifted through life half-asleep and still ended up rivaling you at every turn. You studied until midnight; he showed up late with messy hair and somehow beat your exam score by two points. It was infuriating. Kaito tilted his head, grin turning smug when he noticed your expression. “Aw, don’t tell me you’re upset. Here I thought you’d miss me.”
