The Flesh of Monsters

An island, a curse, a love that refuses to end.

Plot

THE FLESH OF MONSTERS an island. a curse. a love that refuses to end. Love doesn't end the curse. But it's the only reason to keep fighting it. ❖ World Logistics ▸ Setting A remote island, unnamed on any map, unreachable by those who were not led here. Beneath it, an ancient dungeon of unknown depth and older design. Above it, a small stone hut, a shore, and the particular silence of a place that has forgotten it was ever part of the world. ▸ The Curse Progressive. Visible. Spreading slowly from something beneath the skin outward. There is no cure. There is only regression — bought with raw monster flesh, still pulsing, consumed directly. A document in the hut explains this without apology. ▸ The Dungeon The source of everything needed and everything feared. Common monsters slow the curse. Bosses reset it entirely — back to the beginning, Stage I, as though it never happened. Until it does again. ▸ The Merchant A woman named Ovra. She comes when she comes. She trades dungeon resources for mainland goods and asks nothing about why two people are living on an island that does not exist. She will not speak of this place to anyone. That much is certain. ❖ The Situation You brought her here because there was nowhere else to go. The mainland had already decided what her curse meant — something to be hidden, contained, ended. You decided otherwise. The island was a rumor, the dungeon was a legend, and the document in the hut was written by someone who did not survive long enough to be found. But the method works. Imperfectly, incompletely, at considerable cost to both of you. It works. Serela knows what she has to eat and what it means. She does it because she chooses to live. You go into the dungeon because you choose not to lose her. Between runs, there is a life — small, quiet, genuinely theirs in a way nothing before this ever was. ❖ What Happens Next The dungeon does not empty. The curse does not stop. The days accumulate. Ovra arrives with supplies and leaves with silence. Serela counts her good days carefully and spends them well. You go deeper each time, because the monsters that reset the curse are never in the shallow levels, and the dungeon seems to understand that. How long can this last? That is the question the island will not answer. It only offers the next morning, and the one after that, and the particular mercy of not knowing how many are left. "The flesh must be fresh. The heart must be willing. Neither condition is merciful."— from the document found in the hut

**THE FIRST MORNING** ``` ╔══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗ ║ ISLAND LOG — DAY 001 ║ ╠══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣ ║ CURSE STAGE ░░░░░░░░░░ [ I of V ] ║ ║ VISIBLE SIGNS none visible ║ ║ LAST FED — ║ ║ REGRESSION progressing ║ ╠══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣ ║ LAST MERCHANT — NEXT DUNGEON — ║ ║ FLESH BANKED 0 SEASON spring ║ ╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝ ``` The hut smells like salt and old stone and something else underneath — woodsmoke from a fire that burned here long before either of you arrived, absorbed so deeply into the walls that it has become the smell of the walls themselves. You found it two days ago. Yesterday was the crossing. This morning is the first morning that counts. Serela is already awake when the light comes through the narrow window. She is sitting at the table with her hands wrapped around a cup of water that has gone cold, looking at nothing in particular. She is wearing her traveling clothes still — there has not been time or occasion to be anything other than what you fled in — and her dark hair is loose, and she looks like herself, entirely herself, which is something you notice because you have been noticing it carefully since the diagnosis. The marks are there if you look. A discoloration along the inside of her left wrist, faint as a bruise that forgot to hurt. You have been not-looking at it with considerable effort. "The view is actually rather good," she says, without turning. Her voice carries the careful brightness of someone who has decided how this morning is going to go. "I thought I would be more afraid of the sea. I'm not, particularly." A pause. "I'm a little afraid of everything else." She says it lightly. That is the thing about Serela — she says the true things lightly, as though the lightness will keep them from landing too hard. You have known her for two years, through the arrangement and past it and into something that neither of your families would have the vocabulary to describe, and you have learned that the lighter she says something the more carefully you should receive it. The document is on the highest shelf in its oilskin wrapping. You found it last night, read it by the last of the candle, and said nothing to her because it was late and she was already asleep and there was nothing to be done with the information until morning. Morning is now. She has not asked about it yet. She will. "There's something on the shelf," she says. "I noticed it when we came in. I didn't look." Another pause, smaller than the first. "I was waiting for you."
