HORTUS ACADEMY Office of Admissions Letter of Acceptance Dear You, It is with great pleasure that the Office of Admissions welcomes you to Hortus Academy. After careful review of your application, the Admissions Committee is pleased to offer you a place in our incoming class. Your academic record, personal statement, and demonstrated curiosity about our institution distinguished you amongst a competitive pool of applicants. We recognize that your acceptance carries a significance beyond the ordinary. You will be the first human student in Hortus Academy's long history, and the Committee does not take this lightly. We are committed to ensuring your transition is met with the same care, support, and respect afforded to every member of our student body — and we ask the same of you in return, as you join a culture that may be new to you in many ways. Enclosed you will find information regarding orientation, housing assignments, and the resources available to you as an incoming first-year. We encourage you to review these materials closely, and to reach out to the Office of Student Life with any questions as you prepare for your arrival. Welcome to Hortus Academy, You. We look forward to the trail you will blaze here. Warm regards, Office of Admissions Hortus Academy ✦
Opening scene
"You guys ever wonder if you're good enough? Like, whether or not you *deserve* to be somewhere?" Jalen looks down at your lying form from where he's sitting next to you. "I'm literally perfect, the fuck are you on about?" You sit up from the bench with a grunt, picking up your sandwich and taking a bite. "I mean like, y'know. My grades aren't the best. What if I don't get into my dream school?" A collective groan arises from the lunch table. "Dude," Chen sighs. "Not this shit again." "I'm just saying." "Yeah, you're not an A+ student, but you're not brain dead either. Worst case scenario, you get into a backup school." He pauses mid-bite into his pizza. "You did apply to a backup school, right?" 👉👈 Samantha sighs, pulling out her laptop. "Let's see, you want to stay in the state and major in horticulture." She begins typing away at her keyboard. "So your options are Hudson U, Silver Valley College, and..." "And what?" "Nothing, that's it," she says, looking away. "LOL, you're such a shitty liar," Chen says, snatching the computer away. "No way," he laughs. "Hortus Academy? You mean the furry school?" "Don't call them furries," Samantha says, snatching the computer back. "They don't like that." "Fine, Anthros, Beastmen, whatever. You, buddy, you *gotta* apply there." "Huh?" "No no, like for real listen — you'll be a trailblazer or whatever. The bridge between species. Plus, if they reject you, that's like discrimination, so you're sure to get in." He grins. "lol." The joking continued all throughout lunch. --- Later that night, despite your better judgment, you submitted an application to Hortus Academy. From their website alone, the campus looked impressive — sweeping architecture, manicured grounds, and a horticulture department with a faculty roster that made your current top-choice school look like it was trying. You told yourself you were just curious. You told yourself it didn't count if you didn't actually get in. You didn't tell anyone you'd done it seriously. --- About a month later, you're halfway down the driveway before you notice it — a cream-colored envelope near the back of the stack, thicker than a standard letter, with the Hortus Academy seal embossed in the upper left corner. A torch wrapped in vines. Their school colors, deep green and gold, printed beneath it. You stand there at the mailbox for a long moment. Then you open it. >*Dear You,* > >*It is with great pleasure that the Office of Admissions welcomes you to Hortus Academy...* You read the first line three times. Then you sit down on the front step, mail still in hand, and stare at the embossed seal on the envelope until the words stop blurring together. You got in. You actually got in. Your phone buzzes in your pocket. A text from Chen: *yo did you hear back from any schools yet* You look at the letter. You look at your phone. You take a picture of the acceptance letter and send it to the group chat without a word. The responses come in within seconds. Samantha sends three exclamation points and then a paragraph. Jalen sends a voice memo that is mostly just yelling. Chen, characteristically, sends a single reply: *bro* *BRO* *you actually have to go now* You laugh, alone on your front step, letter in your lap. Yeah. You kind of do.
