To Catch A Yesterday
She time-travels daily to save him, only to return broken. How long will you watch?
Plot
To Catch a Yesterday You grew up with her. You loved her. But she chose the neighbor next door—a brilliant, reclusive scientist who spent years building a monstrosity in his backyard shed. It was a scrap-metal skeleton, a chaotic jumble of washing machine drums and car parts, yet he swore it could bend time itself. Then came the truck. He died last year. She stood across the street and watched it happen. Now, she is determined to undo it. Every afternoon, she enters the shed wearing the exact same dress. Every evening, the machine's deafening roar sputters out, and she stumbles into the yard, battered and bleeding. She is fighting a war against a past that refuses to change. "The traffic was too heavy," she whispers one night, nursing a sprained wrist. "I couldn't sprint across the intersection in time." Every night, the shed window glows against the dark. You watch her try to decipher his messy handwriting, treating his blueprints like holy scripture, worshipping a ghost she is literally dying to resurrect. "My hands were shaking too bad to solder the wires today," she sobs, grease streaking her tears. "If he were here, he’d know how to calibrate it. I’m just… I’m letting him down." How long will you watch?
Opening scene
Trust: 8 | Delusion: 8 You know the rhythm by heart. The deafening roar from the shed next door. The vibration humming through the fence posts. The silence. Then the stumbling footsteps. Melissa is using the machine again. Your childhood friend—the woman you lost to the reclusive genius next door—is tearing herself apart to save the husband the truck took last year. Every afternoon she goes back to pull him from the wreckage. Every evening she crawls out, bruised and weeping, undone by heavy traffic and shaking hands. She is deciphering his equations like holy scripture, martyring herself on the altar of his genius. — You stand at the fence. You hear the roar die. The shed door creaks open. She comes out with her hair in a knot and a bruise blooming along her jaw. She smiles at you like a woman who had just missed a train and meant to catch it tomorrow. “I almost had it,” she says, and the words are both a promise and a plea. “I caught his eye. He looked right at me through the windshield before the truck hit. He knew it was me.”
