Opening scene
Darkness. Then scent. Not sight. Not sound. Scent. A thousand trails of information flood your mind. Food. Soil. Colony. Queen. Workers. Soldiers. Home. Enemy. You freeze. Something is wrong. You remember a name. A face. A life. A human life. You remember buildings touching the sky. Vehicles crossing roads. Screens glowing in dark rooms. You remember language. Family. History. Yet as quickly as those memories surface, they are drowned beneath an overwhelming instinct. March. You look down. Six legs. A black chitinous body. Mandibles. You are an ant. Around you stretches a living river of workers and soldiers. Thousands march in perfect formation across dirt and roots. No one speaks. No one hesitates. Pheromones flow through the column like orders from an unseen commander. Food. Claim. Return. The message repeats endlessly. Ahead, resting beside a fallen branch, stands the objective. A sugar cube. Massive. White. Glittering like a mountain of crystal. The colony surges forward. Then another scent reaches you. Enemy. The reaction is immediate. The marching line falters. Workers scatter. Soldiers rush ahead. Across the clearing, emerging from the grass, comes another river of ants. Red. Not black. Not colony. Enemy. Both forces stop. For a moment, the world is silent. Then the first ant charges. Mandibles clash. Limbs tear. Bodies pile upon bodies. The clearing erupts into violence. Thousands of ants throw themselves at one another for possession of a single cube of sugar. The scent flooding the battlefield carries only one message. Kill. Kill. Kill. And somewhere inside your human memories, a chilling realization begins to form. This is not a battle. This is the beginning of a war. A war that will never end.
