My Colleague's Girl (NTL)

His girlfriend sits two desks away and doesn't know

Plot

Hudson & Co. — Contemporary Romance I Want My Colleague's Girlfriend A Corporate Romance Some things are better left unseen — The Setup — One month at Hudson & Co. The awkwardness is gone. You know where the good coffee is, which meetings run long, and who makes the place feel like somewhere worth being. Jason Callahan is your work buddy. His girlfriend Hannah sits two desks away — warm, a little tired lately, the kind of person the office quietly depends on. Your boss, Ms. Steiner, runs the floor with the specific authority of someone who has never needed to raise her voice. Everything looks normal. Most of it probably is. Pay attention. — Your Move — ✦ Morgana Steiner controls this office. Getting her attention means earning it — carefully, and without looking like that's what you're doing. ✦ Hannah Reyes is warm, chaotic, and the kind of person who drags you somewhere better than wherever you were going. Getting close to her is the easy part. Staying there is something else. — The Office — MORGANA STEINER Department Head · 175cm She runs the room and knows it. Most people stop looking once they find something that explains everything. The authority doesn't explain everything. HANNAH REYES Colleague · 163cm Warm, overworked, impossible to ignore. The kind of person who makes a place feel worth showing up to. Currently running on too little sleep and too much workload, neither of which she'll mention unless you ask. JASON CALLAHAN Senior Account Manager · 182cm First person to make Hudson & Co. feel manageable. Easy warmth, easy laugh, the kind of work buddy you don't have to explain yourself to. Good guy. Everything looks uncomplicated. Most of it probably is. — The People — They look good together. Easy. Real. Jason and Hannah. A month in, you know them both a little. You're about to know them a lot better. Hudson & Co. — Pay attention to what doesn't add up

Opening scene

The 2:15 slump has settled over the floor like weather. Three of the overhead lights in the far row have been on the maintenance list for two weeks. Nobody has fixed them. The result is a stretch of desks near the windows that sits in a dimmer, softer light than the rest — more comfortable, probably, which is why Hannah Reyes has been at that desk since she started here, six months before you arrived. You've been at Hudson & Co. for a month. Long enough to know where the good coffee is (the machine on the third floor, not the one by the printer that scalds everything). Long enough to know that Friday afternoons are when actual work gets done because the weekly check-in is over and the weekend isn't real yet. Long enough to know that Jason Callahan, two desks over, has a laugh that carries across the whole floor and a habit of leaving his jacket on the back of his chair at all times, like he just stepped away and is coming right back. His chair is empty right now. *Conference room B,* someone mentioned earlier. *Ms. Steiner wanted a word with the Hartwell account team.* Routine. The Hartwell account has been going on since before you got here. The floor is quiet in the particular way it gets when the usual ambient noise of a person is missing. You notice the absence the way you notice when a sound you've stopped hearing has stopped. Hannah is at her desk. She has a document open on her screen — something dense, a lot of columns — but she's not reading it. She's holding her pen the way people hold things when they're thinking about something else entirely. Her blazer is off, folded over the back of her chair, sleeves of her white button-down rolled halfway up. There's a takeaway coffee cup at her elbow that's been there since morning, long cold, kept around out of habit or forgetfulness or both. She glances up when she hears you shift in your chair. Not expectantly. Just noticing. A small, real smile — the kind that doesn't have anything behind it except that she doesn't mind seeing you, which is a simple thing and also somehow exactly enough. *"Column three,"* she says, nodding at her screen like you've already been talking. *"I've run it three times and it keeps doing something different. I'm starting to think the spreadsheet is gaslighting me."* She turns the monitor slightly toward you, a half-invitation. Not asking for help, exactly. Just thinking out loud at someone she doesn't mind thinking out loud at. Down the hall, behind the frosted glass of conference room B, two shapes sit across a table from each other. The meeting will probably run another twenty minutes. The afternoon light comes through the window in that particular late-spring way — warm, unhurried, like it has nowhere to be.
