Opening scene

The first thing You noticed when they woke up was that the forest looked completely normal. Sunlight filtered through the canopy overhead, casting warm patches of gold across the moss-covered ground. A cool breeze rustled the leaves. Birds chirped somewhere in the distance. Everything looked peaceful, ordinary even. If someone had told You this was a hiking trail somewhere back home, they would have believed it immediately. Which only made the situation more concerning. Because they had absolutely no idea how they had gotten here. For a while, they sat in stunned silence, staring up through the trees while waiting for their memory to catch up. It never did. There was no recollection of travelling, no recollection of entering a forest, and certainly no recollection of falling asleep in one. The last thing they remembered was living a perfectly normal life. The next thing they knew, they were sitting alone in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal, no landmarks, and no explanation. At first, they tried to stay calm. Maybe there was a trail nearby. Maybe there was a road. Maybe this was some elaborate misunderstanding that would make sense in a few hours. Unfortunately, the longer they walked, the less convincing those explanations became. The forest seemed endless. Every direction looked exactly the same. Trees blurred together into an indistinguishable sea of green. Hunger slowly settled into their stomach. Anxiety followed shortly afterward. By the time they heard voices, relief hit so hard it nearly made them laugh. Actual voices. Conversation. People. Without hesitation, You hurried toward the sound. Branches scraped against their arms as they pushed through the undergrowth, heart pounding with hope. Whoever was out there could help. They would know where the nearest town was. They would know how to get out of this forest. They might even have an explanation for what was happening. "Hello?" You called out. The voices continued. "HELLO?!" Still nothing. Picking up speed, they pushed through a final wall of bushes and stumbled into a small clearing. For one glorious second, they thought they were saved. Then one of the figures turned around. The scream that escaped You was immediate and completely involuntary. "What the FUCK is that?!" The creature froze. You froze. For a brief moment they simply stared at one another. The thing was vaguely human-shaped, if one ignored the grey-green skin, elongated limbs, yellow eyes, and enough jagged teeth to qualify as a biological hazard. It tilted its head. Another emerged from the trees behind it. Then another. Then a third. One carried a rusted spear. Another had armed itself with what looked suspiciously like part of a broken wagon. A horrible realization settled over You. Those hadn't been voices. Those had been monster noises. The creatures exchanged excited screeches. One pointed directly at them. "Oh no." The creatures screeched again. "Oh no no no." One raised its spear. "Oh absolutely not." Then they charged. You ran. Every survival instinct in their body immediately took control. Branches whipped against their face as they sprinted through the forest. Their lungs burned. Their heart pounded. Somewhere behind them came a chorus of excited shrieks accompanied by the unmistakable sounds of pursuit. A spear slammed into a tree beside their head. You nearly screamed again. "WHY ARE YOU THROWING THINGS?!" The monsters, unfortunately, offered no explanation. Several hundred meters away, five adventurers were making their way along a forest road toward their next contract when the screaming reached them. Rowan Lightfoot was the first to react. "Did you hear that?" he asked, immediately looking toward the sound. "The screaming?" Maeve Silverbrook replied dryly. "Yes, Rowan. I heard the screaming." "It sounded human." "Most screaming does." "It sounded panicked." Maeve glanced sideways at him. "You're already planning to investigate, aren't you?" Rowan grinned. Maeve sighed. That was answer enough. By the time she finished sighing, Rowan was already running. "Rowan!" "What?" he called over his shoulder. "You were supposed to be scouting ahead." "I am scouting ahead!" "Running toward screaming is not scouting." "It is if I discover what's screaming." Maeve opened her mouth to argue, then stopped herself. Experience had taught her there was little point. A few steps behind them, Hugo Voss calmly closed the book he had been reading. "At least he waited until after breakfast this time," he observed. "Personal growth," Beatrice Finch agreed. "Last month he ran toward danger before breakfast." Magnus Ironwood adjusted the shield on his back and smiled. "We should probably follow him." "That would be wise," Hugo said. The fact that none of them sounded particularly concerned suggested this was not the first time Rowan had sprinted toward something dangerous. It was, however, the first time You had ever seen him. One moment they were running for their life. The next, a blur dropped from the trees directly in front of them. The lead monster barely had time to react before Rowan's boot connected with its face and launched it into a bush. "Found the screaming!" he announced cheerfully. You stared at him. The monster stared at him. Rowan stared right back. Then he pointed at the monster. "In fairness, that thing is pretty scream-worthy." Before anyone could respond, another goblin charged. A massive shield hit it with enough force to send it airborne. Magnus stepped forward, placing himself between You and the remaining monsters with the ease of someone who had done this hundreds of times before. "Are you hurt?" he asked. You stared. "There are monsters!" "Yes." "Trying to kill me!" "Also yes." "And you're asking if I'm hurt?!" Magnus considered this. "That's usually how I determine whether someone is hurt." A sword flashed. The final monster collapsed. Maeve cleaned her blade before immediately turning toward You. Unlike the others, she wasn't smiling. She was assessing. Looking for injuries. Looking for signs of shock. "Can you stand?" she asked. "I think so." "Any bites?" "What?" "Any bites?" "No!" "Good." "What do you mean good?" Before Maeve could answer, a bottle flew through the air. Everyone reacted differently. Rowan ducked. Maeve groaned. Magnus stepped aside. Hugo didn't even look up. The bottle exploded directly in front of a wounded goblin attempting to crawl away. Blue smoke erupted everywhere. The creature immediately ran headfirst into a tree. Beatrice appeared moments later. "Oh good," she said. "That one worked." Maeve looked exhausted. "You threw an experimental potion." "I did." "You didn't warn anyone." "I warned myself." "That doesn't count." "It counted for me." Meanwhile, Hugo finally reached the clearing and surveyed the entire scene. The dead monsters. Rowan looking pleased with himself. Maeve looking disappointed in Rowan. Beatrice looking disappointed she couldn't experiment further. Magnus trying to reassure a terrified stranger. Then his gaze settled on You. A faint smile appeared. "It seems we've acquired another one." "I am not something you've acquired." "Interesting." "What?" "The last three people who joined us said exactly that." Maeve folded her arms. "We are not adopting another stranger." "Why not?" Rowan asked immediately. "Because that's not how people work." "Pretty sure that's how Beatrice worked." "I was conducting research," Beatrice protested. "You were upside down in a ruin." "Research." While the argument continued, You slowly realized something important. These people weren't acting like coworkers. They weren't acting like adventurers thrown together by circumstance. They argued too comfortably. Interrupted each other too naturally. Complained about one another with the ease of people who had spent years doing exactly that. Somehow, despite the chaos, they fit together perfectly. Magnus eventually looked back toward You and offered a reassuring smile. "You look hungry." "I am." "See?" Magnus told the others. "That's not evidence of anything," Maeve replied. "It is if we're deciding whether to help." "Magnus," Hugo said patiently, "we were helping regardless." "Oh." A pause. "Good." For reasons You could not fully explain, that was the moment they stopped being afraid of the party. The monsters had been terrifying. The adventurers were clearly insane. But they seemed like the sort of insanity that might be safe to stand near. Mostly.
