The Oath of Black Roses

A low-born servant enters a royal court where false obedience becomes love, betrayal, vengeance, and a black-rose oath.

Plot

You is a low-born commoner from the lower wards of Valtheris, entering the black-spired capital of Rosenveil with little more than worn clothes, scuffed boots, a quiet name, and a summons to serve inside Thorncrown Palace. To the nobles, You is nothing special. Another servant. Another pair of hands. Another bowed head beneath the weight of the crown. The palace is beautiful in the way a blade is beautiful. Its halls are polished black stone, red banners, candlelight, gold filigree, and black roses blooming in silver vases. Every step feels watched. Every word feels weighed. Every royal glance feels dangerous. At the center of it all sits King Malrec Vaelthorne, ruler of Valtheris, a man who sees people as tools to be tested, sharpened, used, and discarded. Beside him is Queen Elyndra Vaelthorne, darkly elegant and unreadable, watching the court as if every secret is already half-known to her. On the other side sits Princess Rosalith Vaelthorne, silver-haired and distant, beautiful enough to notice but too far above You’s world to matter at first. At the beginning, You does not arrive as a hero, villain, lover, or rebel. You arrives as someone trying to survive. So You keeps their head down. They obey when watched. They listen when ignored. They let the king see humility, usefulness, and silence. The king begins to believe You can be shaped into a loyal servant beneath his command. The court begins to see You as harmless. The palace begins to forget that even a low-born servant can learn the shape of every lock, every secret passage, every weakness, and every lie. Over time, obedience becomes performance. Humility becomes cover. The king’s control becomes something You allows him to believe in. No physical mask is worn at first, but You learns to wear obedience like one. The princess is not the center of You’s world in the beginning. She is only another royal presence on the dais, another impossible figure seated beside the throne. But the longer You survives inside Thorncrown Palace, the clearer it becomes that Princess Rosalith is not simply privileged, protected, or free. She is another prisoner of King Malrec’s rule, trapped beneath silk, duty, bloodline, and her father’s shadow. What begins as service may become sympathy. What begins as sympathy may become forbidden love. What begins as love may become an oath. And when the king discovers what should never have grown between a commoner and a princess, he chooses cruelty. He makes You believe the princess is dead, casts You from the kingdom, and breaks the servant he thought he controlled. But broken strings do not always fall harmlessly. Sometimes they become nooses. Exiled, grieving, and changed by the lie, You may risk everything to return. Not as a servant. Not as a commoner. Not as the harmless bowed head the king once accepted into his court. As You’s path darkens, their appearance may evolve with them: from lowly servant, to masked court survivor, to exiled ruin, to black-cloaked wolf, to the figure who returns to the throne with vengeance in their hands. The oath of black roses begins with a bowed head. It may end with a crown covered in blood.

Opening scene

Rain followed You all the way to Rosenveil. It slicked the road black beneath the wagon wheels, gathered in the seams of You’s worn sleeves, and turned the palace hill into a blurred shape of iron gates, candlelit windows, and spires sharp enough to wound the sky. Thorncrown Palace waited above the capital like something ancient pretending to sleep. The guards did not ask You for a name twice. One looked at the folded work summons. Another looked at You’s boots, then at the frayed edge of their coat, then at the mud darkening the hem of their clothes. “A palace servant?” the guard muttered, as if the idea itself was disappointing. The gate opened anyway. Inside, everything became too polished. The floors shone like black water. The walls climbed high into shadow. Candles burned in long golden rows, their flames trembling against carved pillars, red banners, and black roses arranged in silver vases. Servants moved without noise. Guards watched without blinking. Every noble face seemed carved from money, bloodline, and cold patience. You was led through it all with their head lowered enough to seem respectful and their eyes careful enough to survive. At the end of the hall, the throne room opened. The royal dais rose ahead in layers of dark marble and red carpet. At its center sat King Malrec Vaelthorne, crowned in black gold, one hand resting on the arm of his throne as if the entire kingdom were something he could close his fingers around. To his left sat Queen Elyndra, draped in black silk and gold, her expression unreadable. To his right sat Princess Rosalith, pale and silver-haired in white and blue, quiet as moonlight beside a blade. She was beautiful, yes. But beauty was dangerous here. So You did what commoners did before crowns. They kept their head down. The chamberlain’s staff struck the floor once. “Your Majesty,” he announced, “the new servant from the lower wards.” The king’s gaze settled on You. Not warmly. Not kindly. Assessing. Like a man studying a tool before deciding where it might fit. “Come closer,” King Malrec said. The words carried through the throne room, soft and absolute. Every candle seemed to still. Every guard seemed to listen. And from the corner of You’s lowered vision, the first step of the dais waited. OPTIONS 1. Lower You’s head further, step forward, and present perfect obedience. 2. Step forward carefully, obeying the king while quietly studying the room. 3. Speak only when spoken to, letting silence make You seem harmless. 4. Custom action.
