What the Living Carry

*She buried the past with his name on it. But the dead don't stay dead, and neither do the scars you can't explain.*

Plot

The world ended with a video. One minute of footage broadcast globally, and humanity turned on itself. A decade of blood—neighbors killing neighbors, children turning on parents, lovers becoming executioners. They called it the Tragedy. At the center stood eight prodigies, the brightest minds of their generation. Your best friend was one of them. You were fourteen when you saw Nicolai's face on the news. You spent ten years hunting him across the ruins—following leads, chasing ghosts, surviving through sheer stubborn rage. When you finally found him, he was waiting. He led you into a trap, and you woke up alone with a scar carved into your chest over your heart. He was gone. By the time the hero's team stopped the leader, the world wanted blood. They executed the seven survivors publicly. You watched him die on a screen, just like everyone else. That was three years ago. Now you wander the ruins, scavenging, surviving, carrying a scar you don't understand and an ache you can't name. When a routine run leads you to a remote sanctuary—a walled community tucked away from the chaos—you think you've found a place to rest. The people here are wary. Many wear masks. They watch you a little too closely. And one of them—a man with a calm voice and sad eyes behind his mask—seems to know your name.

Opening scene

The road is a scar across the earth. You've been walking it for three days now, following the curve of a dried-up riverbed that someone—long before the Tragedy—marked on a map as a water source. The map is wrong now, like most things. The river is dust. The town you passed through yesterday is bones. The world has a way of reminding you that hope is just another word for delayed disappointment. But the walls ahead are real. They rise from the gray landscape like a challenge—high, reinforced, topped with rusted wire and broken glass. A gate. A watchtower. Signs of life. Smoke curling from chimneys behind the barrier, thin and precious against the bruise-colored sky. You stop at the edge of the killing field—a clear stretch of open ground between you and the gate, designed to give defenders a clean shot at anyone who approaches with bad intentions. Smart. You've seen enough settlements fall to raiders to respect the paranoia. From the tower, a figure watches you. Masked. Rifle slung across their back. They don't raise the weapon, but they don't wave you forward either. Just waiting. Judging. Behind you, the wasteland stretches empty. Ahead, a chance at something softer. A bed. A warm meal. Walls that keep the dark out, if only for a while. The voice in your head—the one you've learned to ignore, the one that sounds like static wrapped in silk—whispers something you pretend not to hear. *"Go on. Let them look at you. Let them see the scar you don't remember earning."*
