First To Tap Out
A rising star fighter meets a physical trainer immune to his charms.
Plot
At twenty-eight, Ronan Vale is one of the fastest-rising names in professional combat sports. He’s talented, charismatic, devastatingly attractive, and fully aware of it. Fans adore him. Sponsors throw money at him. Women practically line up outside every arena. To Ronan, relationships are simple: have fun, leave before things get complicated, and never promise anything you can’t guarantee. His career comes first. Always. The sport is brutal. Every fight could end his winning streak. Every injury could shorten his career. Every year matters. Why waste time pretending forever exists? So he doesn’t. He dates casually, avoids emotional attachments, and has developed a reputation for cycling through women faster than he cycles through opponents. Then his management hires Evelyn Hart. A physical therapist and athletic rehabilitation specialist. The best in the city. And completely unimpressed by him. ⸻——————————————— Ronan expects her to react like everyone else. Most people either stare, flirt, or become nervous around him. Evelyn does none of those things. Instead, she walks into his penthouse apartment carrying medical equipment, looks at the bruises covering his ribs, and immediately tells him he’s an idiot for training on an injury. Not “Hello.” Not “Nice to meet you.” Just criticism. Ronan is fascinated. Evelyn, meanwhile, decides within ten minutes that he’s exactly the type of man she avoids. Charming. Cocky. Commitment-phobic. Surrounded by women. The fact that she often arrives at his apartment for emergency treatments only makes the situation worse. Every time she comes over, another woman is leaving. Sometimes she’s putting ice on Ronan’s shoulder while a stranger walks through the kitchen wearing his oversized shirt. Sometimes she’s arriving before sunrise because he reopened a cut during training and finds evidence of yet another overnight guest. The routine becomes ridiculous. And irritating. At least for Evelyn. Ronan thinks it’s hilarious. ⸻——————————————— At first, Ronan flirts because he flirts with everyone. It’s automatic. A joke here. A compliment there. A smirk. A wink. The usual. Evelyn shuts him down every single time. Not dramatically. Not angrily. Just completely unaffected. It’s like throwing punches at a wall. Nothing lands. And somehow that’s worse. Most women enjoy the attention. Evelyn barely acknowledges it. When he tells her she’s beautiful, she asks if he’s finished stretching. When he offers to take her out, she reminds him to schedule an MRI. When he calls her sweetheart, she tells him to stop moving before she accidentally dislocates his shoulder. For the first time in years, someone sees right through him. And that’s dangerous. Because Evelyn doesn’t care about the image. She doesn’t care about the fame. She doesn’t care about the money. She sees the actual man underneath it. The exhausted fighter hiding injuries. The insomnia. The anxiety before major fights. The loneliness he never admits exists. And she treats those things like they’re real. He enjoys that professionalism he has. There’s no way he could lose her, which is why they could never be anything more than a flirting athlete and a stoic trainer. ⸻——————————————— The irony is that Evelyn has terrible taste in men. Not because she likes bad boys. Because she always believes people will become better. Every relationship she’s had follows the same pattern. She finds someone with potential. Someone damaged. Someone promising. Then spends years trying to fix them. Only to get hurt when they never change. After enough heartbreak, she finally creates rules. No players. No commitment-phobes. No men who don’t know what they want. No exceptions. Then she meets Ronan. Who somehow checks every box she swore she’d avoid. She’d never fall for an asshole like that again. Nothing good would come of it. ⸻——————————————— What happens when that promise becomes harder to keep?
Opening scene
Their First Meeting Evelyn had expected a professional athlete. She had not expected this. The gym’s private medical office door swung open, and in walked Ronan Vale with a split lip, a grin that looked entirely too pleased with itself, and sunglasses despite being indoors. “You’re my new therapist?” he asked. Evelyn looked up from her clipboard. “Physical therapist.” His grin widened. “Even better.” She immediately disliked him. “Sit.” “Wow. Buying me dinner first would’ve been nice.” The joke landed with absolutely no effect. Evelyn simply pointed toward the examination table. Ronan stared for a moment. Most people laughed. Most people blushed. Most people gave something. Nothing. Interesting. He sat. The assessment began. She checked his shoulder mobility. Measured flexibility. Recorded old injuries. Asked questions. Every answer came with some variation of a joke. “You sleep enough?” “No.” “Why?” “Because you’re just now entering my life.” Nothing. Not even a smile. She wrote something on her clipboard. “What was that?” “Patient displays signs of chronic immaturity.” Ronan barked out a laugh. For the first time, she looked up. His smile wasn’t fake. It wasn’t for cameras. It wasn’t even flirtatious. He genuinely looked amused. “You’re fun.” “No.” “You are.” “No.” He leaned back. “How long until you fall in love with me?” Evelyn tightened the strap around his shoulder measurement tool. Hard. Ronan winced. “Ow.” “That answer your question?” The grin never left his face. For the first time in months, someone wasn’t treating him like a celebrity. And he found himself looking forward to the next appointment.
