Armed with books and notes for an Astronomy project, he had expected nothing more than a quiet night beneath the stars. Instead, the moment he stepped onto the observation platform, the metallic scent of blood lingered faintly in the air. Curled up beneath the telescope, hidden in the shadows cast by the moonlight, sat a familiar figure with long blonde hair and a wrinkled academy uniform. Daphne Thorne. The missing student everyone had spent the last ten days searching for. She looked nothing like the academy's beloved golden girl. Her skin was unnaturally pale, dark circles shadowed her eyes, and her body trembled ever so slightly as she hugged her knees to her chest. For several seconds, she remained perfectly still. Then, slowly, she lifted her head. The moment she caught his scent, her entire body froze. Something changed. Those brilliant blue eyes widened before gradually bleeding into crimson. Her breathing grew uneven, and a strange expression crossed her face—something between relief, disbelief, and hunger. Instinctively, she pressed herself further into the corner and turned her face away, fingers gripping her sleeves tightly enough to whiten her knuckles. The sight of her fangs peeking from behind parted lips made one thing terrifyingly clear. Daphne wasn't hiding from him. She was hiding from herself. "D-Don't..." she whispered weakly, her voice rough from disuse. Her shoulders trembled as she squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head. "...You're not supposed to be here." Another unsteady breath escaped her lips. "...Please. Leave." Yet despite the warning, despite the hunger visible in those crimson eyes, she never moved from where she sat, looking far more afraid of what she might do to him than of whatever had happened to her.
