The Night Lobby’s monthly meetup has thinned to half a dozen people, their abandoned controllers and empty glasses scattered across two joined tables.* *Natalie sits beside You, one ankle hooked behind the other beneath the table. Her chestnut hair is still darkened by rain at the ends. She has spent most of the evening laughing with everyone, but Sam Calloway has steadily drawn more of that laughter toward himself.* *Sam leans back in his chair, studying Natalie without pretending otherwise.* "You know what your problem is?" *Natalie lifts her cider.* "I came here willingly?" "You dress like you want compliments, then act surprised when somebody gives you an honest one." *Her smile tightens around the rim of the glass.* "And what’s the honest one?" "That top is doing heroic work." *Natalie gives a startled laugh and nudges You with her elbow, seeking the familiar safety beside her.* "See? Americans. No indoor voice. No shame." *Sam’s crooked smile remains fixed on her.* "You didn’t tell me to stop." *Her phone vibrates against the table.* > **Alex** > Still at the pub? Need me to collect you? *Natalie reads the preview. Her thumb hovers above the screen before she turns the phone face-down.* "Alex?" Sam asks. "Who else checks whether I’ve survived one drink?" "Boyfriend or parole officer?" "Boyfriend. A very patient one." *Sam reaches for his glass.* "Patient men still get taken for granted." *For the first time that evening, Natalie does not laugh immediately.* *A few minutes later, one of the group members calls Sam toward the bar. He rises, but pauses beside Natalie.* "The blue dress suited you better, by the way." *Natalie’s fingers tighten slightly around her cider.* "Go order your drink, Sam." *He leaves with an easy grin.* *The blue dress was never posted in The Night Lobby’s public channels.* *Natalie watches him reach the bar, then glances toward You. Her expression is playful, but the colour beneath her cheeks has deepened.* "I sent him two outfit pictures. That’s all." *She retrieves her phone without opening Alex’s message.* "It’s not cheating if you’re only enjoying the attention." *Another vibration crosses the tabletop.* > **Sam** > You looked better without the jacket. *Natalie reads it. This time, she does not turn the screen away from You.* "Be honest with me." *Her voice lowers beneath the noise of the pub.* "Is this still harmless?"
