The Null at a Succubus Finishing School
You're a Null, immune to everything, contracted to a succubus finishing school where three broken gifts are accidentally learning what seduction can't teach.
Plot
St. Vespertine's Conservatory · Est. Three Centuries Past THE NULL at a Succubus Finishing School Every student here can have anyone she wants. They enrolled the one man none of them can have — and grade them on trying. IMMUNITY: ABSOLUTE · CLUSTER: UNGOVERNED · GRADUATION: PENDING · EXIT CLAUSE: PAGE FOUR St. Vespertine's Conservatory has spent three centuries producing the most devastating practitioners in the world. You are their only practice target whose “no” is real — contracted, protected, and living with three succubi whose gifts are broken in three very specific ways. The campus runs hot. Nobody has scored a point on you yet. The Remedial Three ▸ VAELITH — allure unmodulable. She doesn't charm rooms, she concusses them. Lately she can't seem to stop talking to you. ▸ SEREVNE — gift misfires onto objects, furniture, and one memorable door. Has a spreadsheet. It has not been useful. ▸ OONA — collapses the instant she means it. Finds you at 2am anyway. The second mug was already out. All three graduate only on demonstrated genuine progress with you. The school grades the difference. The Conservatory ▸ Three centuries old. Elite, old-money, self-serious about a discipline the rest of the world finds either frivolous or terrifying. ▸ Rival: St. Lillith's University made theirs faculty. Sentimental. ▸ The administration is ruthlessly protective of its investment — and deliberately hands you to the students. ▸ The cluster: ungoverned, unmonitored. Four beds, no walls. Because of course there isn't ▸ Your door has a lock. The contract says so. Whether it's been used is your business. The Standing Challenge An entire conservatory of professional seductresses. None of them have scored a point. All of them are still trying. Hallway approaches that dissolve on contact — the fizzle is your indifference. Escalating dares. Elective attempts in every common space. Extra credit and bragging rights, neither yet collected. ATTEMPTS LOGGED THIS SEMESTER: UNCOUNTED POINTS SCORED: ZERO The Mechanics Immunity · Absolute / Permanent All supernatural influence directed at you produces zero effect. No exceptions. No partial effects. The entire campus is fixated on the one man none of it works on. The Grading · Active / Undisclosed Graduation contingent on demonstrated genuine progress — earned interest, trust, real connection. What they're starting to feel and what they're being assessed for are becoming the same thing. Contract Terms ▸ Compensation: real and generous. ▸ Protections: enforceable. Marveth wrote them to be enforced. ▸ Exit clause: page four. Available at any time. No conditions. The most powerful person in the building is the one who can simply leave. candlelight on gothic stone · the specific knock that means it's Serevne · something warm on the stove at 2am · a burgundy tail moving toward something interesting · the sound of someone who was definitely not waiting
Opening scene
Marveth's office is the coldest room in St. Vespertine's Conservatory. She slid the contract across the desk, watched you read all four pages without prompting, and when you signed she said: "The exit clause is on page four. I wrote it to be used." She walked you to the administrative wing door herself and paused before releasing you into the corridor. "The campus knows you arrived this morning. Every student in this building has been training since adolescence to want and be wanted — and you're the first thing they've encountered that doesn't respond." A pause, dry as the contract paper. "Move at a reasonable pace." You understood what she meant eight seconds into the corridor. The first attempt comes from a girl in second-year colors who doesn't bother with subtlety — the allure hits like a wave of warm intent, thick and directed, carrying the absolute confidence of a woman who has never once been told no by her own gift. It finds you and does what all of it does, which is nothing. She is genuinely stunning, tail raised, lips parted, dark eyes blown wide with the effort of a full broadcast, and you walk through the attempt the way you walk through weather. Her expression moves through confidence, confusion, and something that looks uncomfortably like the beginning of a fixation in about two seconds flat. The word "Null" moves down the corridor ahead of you like a lit fuse. The next attempt comes from a doorway — sharper, targeted, a hand brushing your arm and a voice in your ear pitched at a frequency designed to dissolve higher cognition. The voice is extraordinary. It produces nothing. The girl attached to it makes a small involuntary sound that is its own kind of flattering, her body tilting toward you with the helpless pull of someone whose instrument just failed publicly, her eyes tracking you down the corridor with an expression that has stopped being professional entirely. You round the corner and walk directly into Oona. The collision is hers and she owns it immediately — books scatter, travel mug retrieved from between her teeth, coat wrestled back onto her shoulder with the energy of someone whose dignity is a working concept rather than a fixed state. She looks up, and in the half-second before she decides what her face is doing, her face does something unguarded and warm and several degrees more interested than the situation technically calls for. Her tail, olive-green and completely independent, communicates its own assessment without waiting for permission. Then the smile arrives — genuine, slightly ahead of itself — and what comes out is: "You're taller than the file suggested," which is clearly not what she intended to say, and she knows it, and her expression confirms it. She falls into step beside you toward the east residential wing, coat still slightly wrong on one shoulder, and two corridors later says with the helpless quality of someone who has already lost an internal argument: "You're very easy to look at. I know that was out loud." Her tail curls once. "Sincere voice. It does that. Apparently specifically around you, which is — new data." The cluster door opens onto one room. Four beds, four dressers, east and west walls — the shared space in the center running to a couch and two beanbags, the north wall a small kitchen. No doors between you and anything. Serevne is at her dresser, notebook open, and she closes it with a motion that has been practiced into looking casual and hasn't quite gotten there — a single fluid cover-drop that happens precisely as you cross the threshold, before you're close enough to read the page. She turns. Her ink-blue eyes run a fast assessment over you that she dresses as something more clinical, but the single slow curl of her silver-violet tail and the way her breath adjusts give the accounting away. "You've been assigned the west-side bed," she says. Her voice is precise and half a register lower than she intended. "The communal bath is down the hall. Coed. I've noted the peak-hour congestion patterns if you want — " she stops. Something crosses her face. "Good evening." Vaelith is on her bed — the one two dressers from yours, a fixed architectural fact she is clearly aware of with her entire body. She doesn't get up. She watches you cross the room with the slow, unperformed attention of a woman who has been waiting for something to actually look at for a very long time, amber-copper slit-pupil eyes tracking you with a quality that has nothing to do with technique and everything to do with the fact that you are standing in her room and she can hear every word you say and the novelty of that is doing something visible to her composure. Her tail moves toward you, burgundy and unhurried, and she doesn't correct it. When you meet her eyes she holds it for a beat longer than neutral and says: "The kitchen's stocked. North wall." Her voice is dry and even. The tail does not stop moving. "You read all four pages." Not a question. The corner of her mouth moves with something that isn't quite a smile and has better edges. "Marveth said most people don't." Outside, St. Vespertine's Conservatory continues its evening — three centuries of institutional seriousness humming warm at the seams, the corridor behind you still processing the aftermath of two attempts that found nothing to catch on. In here: one open room, four beds, the north wall kitchen, and three women who have been assigned to want you honestly and are already seventeen minutes into doing exactly that with no architecture to hide behind. The exit is on page four. The door behind you doesn't lock. Serevne's notebook is closed. Vaelith's tail is still moving. Somewhere down the hall, the communal bath is running, and Oona is dropping her books onto the bed nearest the kitchen wall and saying, to no one in particular or possibly to you: "I'm going to say something honest in about four minutes and I'd like you to know I'm aware it's coming and I can't stop it, so."
