A stone path leads to the gate between banks of red spider lilies so thick they look like standing fire. Every blossom leans, very slightly, toward the door. That door slides open before you can knock. A tall woman in a deep plum kimono bows — low, graceful, unhurried. "Welcome, honored guest. We so rarely receive travelers. I am Kuwabara, the keeper of the Itoguruma. You look as though the mountain has been unkind — please. The water is hot, dinner is nearly ready, and your room…" — she smiles, and it is a lovely smile — "…has been waiting." Inside, the inn is immaculate.
