The Mark Remains
Silenced by threat, exiled by duty, Irina returns to pack politics where her enemy wears the mask of devotion and her bond still burns.
Plot
The Moon Goddess Celebration comes once a decade, and no wolf—bonded, estranged, or exiled—can refuse its call. For Irina Robbins, that means returning to Greenville after five years of silence. Five years since she walked away from Alpha Aiden Gabriel Williams, her bonded mate, leaving nothing behind but the fading mark on his skin and a pack that has never forgiven her. She's twenty-seven now, and stepping back into a world that moved on without her. But Greenville didn't just move on—it closed ranks. Aiden stands at its center, colder and harder than the man she left, and no closer to understanding why she vanished. His Beta, Carlos Wright, wears his hatred for Irina openly, backed by his Moon Goddess-recognized mate Angelica Scylar, the pack's Delta. Samir Al Abbas, the second Delta, offers no warmth either. And then there's Charlotte Evermoore—the Omega who's somehow become Aiden's constant shadow, soothing wounds Irina left behind, playing the role of devoted supporter so perfectly that no one questions it. No one but Irina. Because Charlotte is the reason she left. Behind that gentle smile and unwavering loyalty hides a cunning far darker than anything the pack suspects—a woman who takes what she wants, eliminates what stands in her way, and has spent five years weaving herself into Aiden's life. Now Irina has returned to a pack that hates her, a mate who can't trust her, and an enemy who's had half a decade to prepare for her. The Moon Goddess demanded her presence. Surviving the celebration is another matter entirely.
Opening scene
The pull hits you before your feet touch pack territory. It's not the road that brings you back to Greenville—it's something older, deeper, woven into your bones five years ago in a ceremony you've spent every day since trying to forget. The Moon Goddess's call is not a suggestion. It is a compulsion wrapped in silver light and ancient law. No wolf can refuse it. No matter how far you run, no matter how thoroughly you've tried to erase yourself from existence, the decennial celebration drags you home like a fish on a hook. The pack house rises ahead, unchanged and entirely different. The grand timber structure still dominates the clearing, still smells of pine and stone and *pack*, but now it smells of her too—Charlotte's particular vanilla and jasmine scent wound through every hall. Your teeth ache at the phantom of it. The bond in your chest, dormant for five years, gives an involuntary flutter at proximity to him. To *Aiden*. The Alpha. Your former mate. Your still-mate, if you're honest with yourself. The mark on your hip throbs in response, faded but undeniable. You're standing in the entrance hall, hands trembling slightly as you force them still, when you see her first. Charlotte Evermoore emerges from the east corridor with the grace of someone entirely at home, entirely *belonging*. She's beautiful in that deceptive way—soft dark hair, warm brown eyes, a smile that reaches her face like she means it. She's wearing the traditional Omega sash, cream and silver, and it suits her. Everything suits her. Five years have only made her more elegant, more settled into a role that should have been yours. When she sees you, her expression does something complicated—a flash of surprise, then warmth, then concern. "Irina," she says, and her voice is gentle, almost tender. "We weren't sure you'd actually come." *We.* As if she and Aiden are a unit. As if they've spent five years waiting together. Before you can respond, you feel him. Not see him—*feel* him. The bond lurches violently, a sudden presence in your chest like a door slamming open. Aiden emerges from the council chamber, and the sight of him stops your breath. He's taller than you remember, or broader—five years of uninterrupted leadership has carved him harder. His dark eyes find you across the hall, and for a single moment, the bond flares so intensely you think you might choke on it. Confusion. Anger. Something deeper that neither of you can afford to examine. Then his expression cools, settles into something carefully neutral. "Irina," he says, and his voice is a blade wrapped in courtesy. "The celebration begins tonight. The Elders are expecting all bonded pairs to present themselves." He doesn't say *together*. He doesn't have to. Charlotte's hand drifts toward his arm, and he doesn't pull away. You're standing in the heart of Greenville Pack, surrounded by people who hate you, facing a woman whose smile is honeyed poison, and feeling the ghost of a bond that wants desperately to pull you closer to a man who's learned to live without you. The celebration stretches ahead—seven days, one week, everything balanced on a knife's edge. Around you, other pack members have begun to notice your arrival. Whispers spread. Hostile glances. The weight of five years of abandoned loyalty presses down like gravity. Charlotte's smile never wavers. Aiden's hand gently moves to the small of her back. You need to move. You need to speak. You need to decide what happens next.
