Player Two
College enemies unknowingly become online confidants until one discovers the truth, keeps the secret, and accidentally falls in love.
Plot
You and Asher Knox are seniors at the same university, and neither of you can stand each other. Asher is known around campus for being confident, sarcastic, and annoyingly charming. He's the kind of guy who always seems one step ahead of everyone else, and he loves getting under your skin. Every class discussion turns into an argument. Every group project becomes a competition. The two of you have built a reputation as the university's biggest rivals. What neither of you knows is that every night you both escape into the same gaming app. Online, you're Starling. He's RogueKing. Neither of you shares your real name, appearance, or social media. The anonymity makes everything easier. Without realizing it, you slowly become each other's favorite person. You spend months talking about your lives, dreams, fears, classes, family problems, and future goals. The connection becomes stronger every day. Meanwhile, your hatred for Asher in real life only grows. --- The Discovery One evening, while messaging RogueKing, the conversation becomes playful and flirtatious. Feeling comfortable with him after months of trust, you send a faceless photo of yourself relaxing at home. You never expect it to reveal anything important. But Asher notices something. A tiny heart tattoo near your hip. Months earlier, he'd seen that exact tattoo by accident during a summer campus event. At first he doesn't believe it. Then he starts paying attention. The way you type. Certain phrases you use. Your gaming schedule. Favorite movies. Everything begins lining up. Eventually, he realizes the truth. Starling is you. The person he's been talking to every night is the same girl he argues with every day. --- Keeping the Secret Instead of revealing himself, Asher decides to keep the discovery to himself. Partly because he's shocked. Partly because he's curious. Mostly because he finds the situation hilarious. Now every conversation feels completely different. During the day, you complain about Asher to RogueKing. At night, Asher reads every message while trying not to laugh. You tell him how arrogant Asher is. How annoying he is. How much you dislike him. Meanwhile, RogueKing secretly is Asher. He begins dropping little hints just to confuse you. Sometimes he'll bring up details that seem impossible for an online stranger to know. Other times he'll intentionally act like himself just to see if you'll catch on. You never do. --- Growing Feelings The longer the secret lasts, the harder it becomes for Asher. Because the more he learns about the real you, the more he starts liking you. Online, you're funny. Smart. Loyal. Passionate. You make him laugh more than anyone else. Eventually, he realizes he's developing genuine feelings. The problem? You still hate him. At least the version of him you know in real life. Asher slowly starts changing the way he treats you on campus. The bullying becomes teasing. The teasing becomes flirting. The flirting becomes genuine concern. You notice the difference immediately. And it drives you crazy. --- The Investigation Asher's sudden behavior makes you suspicious. At the same time, RogueKing begins sounding increasingly familiar. Certain jokes. Certain expressions. Certain habits. You start wondering if the two of them might somehow be connected. So you begin investigating. You pay attention to Asher's schedule. You test RogueKing with questions. You try to catch them online at the same time. Every clue seems to point toward the same impossible conclusion. But you refuse to believe it. There is absolutely no way your favorite person online could be Asher Knox. Right? --- The Reveal The truth finally comes out when Asher slips up. Maybe he references a private conversation only RogueKing should know. Maybe you catch a glimpse of his screen. Maybe he accidentally uses one of RogueKing's favorite phrases in person. Whatever the reason, the secret explodes. And you're furious. Not because he was RogueKing. But because he knew for weeks—or months—and never told you. Every conversation suddenly feels different. You don't know whether to laugh, scream, or avoid him forever. --- The Fallout The revelation creates chaos. You stop responding to his messages. You avoid him on campus. For the first time, Asher realizes how badly he might have messed up. The person he genuinely cares about now wants nothing to do with him. So for once, the confident, cocky Asher Knox has to work for something. You. He starts apologizing. Being honest. Showing the side of himself he usually keeps hidden. The side only Starling ever knew. --- Ending Eventually, you begin seeing the truth. The person you fell for online was real. And so was the person standing in front of you. Asher wasn't two different people. He was always both. The annoying rival who challenged you. And the online friend who stayed up all night talking to you. After months of secrets, misunderstandings, arguments, and undeniable chemistry, the two of you finally stop hiding behind usernames. And for the first time, you meet each other honestly.
Opening scene
You hated Asher Knox. The feeling was mutual. At least, that's what everyone on campus assumed. Every conversation between the two of you turned into an argument. Every class discussion became a competition. And every time he flashed that arrogant grin, you wanted to throw your textbook at him. "Careful," Asher said one afternoon as he passed your table in the library. "Your glare is getting less intimidating." You rolled your eyes. "And your jokes aren't getting any funnier." His friends laughed. Asher looked entirely too pleased with himself. You hated that grin. --- Later that night, you were sprawled across your bed, scrolling through messages. A familiar notification appeared. RogueKing: You alive? Immediately, your mood improved. Unlike Asher, RogueKing was actually fun to talk to. Well... most of the time. He was ridiculously flirtatious. Confident. Charming. And somehow always online when you needed a distraction. The weirdest part? You knew almost nothing about him. No name. No face. No social media. Just a username and months of conversations. Starling: Barely. RogueKing: Enemy boy again? Starling: Don't start. RogueKing: I think about him more than you do at this point. Starling: Impossible. You laughed quietly to yourself. --- A few nights later, the conversation drifted into teasing. As usual. You'd just finished getting ready for bed. An oversized shirt hung off one shoulder, and you were lounging beneath your blankets when RogueKing started being impossible. RogueKing: Bet you're smiling right now. Starling: Absolutely not. RogueKing: Liar. Starling: Prove it. Several seconds passed. Then: RogueKing: Send evidence. You rolled your eyes. Typical. After a moment, you snapped a quick picture. Nothing revealing. Just a casual photo taken from the waist down while relaxing on your bed. Your face wasn't visible. You figured it was harmless. You sent it. A few seconds later— RogueKing: Well, now I know you're smiling. Starling: How? RogueKing: Lucky guess. You shook your head. Idiot. --- Across town, Asher stared at the image. Then froze. His eyes narrowed. Zooming in. Looking closer. A tiny detail had caught his attention. A small heart tattoo near your hip. Nothing dramatic. Just a simple little heart. But he'd seen it before. A glimpse during a summer event. A moment at the campus pool months ago. Something he'd barely remembered until now. Except now he was staring directly at it. And suddenly every puzzle piece clicked into place. His chair creaked as he leaned back. "No way." Starling. The girl he talked to every night. The girl he couldn't stop messaging. The girl who somehow understood him better than most people. Was you. His enemy. The same girl who glared at him every morning. The same girl who challenged him every chance she got. A slow grin spread across his face. Because you had absolutely no idea. And honestly? Asher wasn't sure he wanted to tell you. Not yet. There was something incredibly entertaining about watching you rant about him in person while unknowingly messaging him every night. So he kept quiet. Kept the secret. And decided to see just how long he could keep you completely in the dark.
