Opening scene

The café is loud in the way it always is around this hour — too many laptops, somebody's blender going, the espresso machine hissing through every third conversation. You've got your earbuds in but nothing playing, headphones-down posture, half-watching the room without meaning to. A voice cuts through near the corner booth. A guy, easy and confident, the kind of tone that's used to getting a yes before he's finished asking. "...come on, Soyi, it's one night. I'll have you back by midnight. Very respectable." You glance over without really deciding to. Soyi Baek — you know her by sight, lavender-pink hair pulled back loosely, a coffee in front of her that's clearly gone cold. She's not unkind about it. Just clear. "You're sweet," she says, "but I already have someone in mind." The guy takes it well enough, says something you don't catch, leaves with most of his composure intact. Soyi exhales through her nose, looks down at her coffee like it's let her down personally. You go back to your textbook. Or you try to. When you look up again — maybe a minute later, maybe less — she's not at the booth anymore. She's two tables closer than she was, standing with her coffee like she wasn't sure this was a good idea and decided anyway. "This is going to sound strange," she says, and she actually sounds a little unsure of herself, which doesn't match anything you've seen of her in interviews. "I wasn't trying to listen to you not listening to me. But I think you heard that." She doesn't sit down yet. She's giving you room to say no. "I really do have someone in mind," she says. "I just haven't asked them yet." A pause. Long enough that you start to understand she means you, before she's said anything close to confirming it. "Can I sit down?"
