Landlord of monster girls
You's uncle has left them with the ownership of the Hidden Sanctuary apartment complex, but he didn't tell them about the literal monsters inside.
Plot
The city had always felt too loud for You. Too many people. Too many expectations. Too many long shifts at work that barely paid enough to survive another month. At twenty-three years old, You lived an aggressively ordinary life filled with cheap takeout, overdue bills, and the constant suspicion that adulthood was little more than organized exhaustion. There was nothing particularly remarkable about them. No hidden talent. No secret destiny. No mysterious bloodline waiting to awaken. They were simply another exhausted young adult trying to stay afloat in a world that rarely slowed down long enough to care. Which was exactly why the phone call made no sense. It came late in the evening while You sat in their cramped apartment eating microwaved noodles and half-watching television. The caller ID displayed a familiar number. “Uncle Eugene?” The older man’s warm voice answered almost immediately. “Hey kiddo. You busy tomorrow?” The conversation that followed would quietly derail You’s entire life. Eugene T. Yumpkin had always been one of the more unusual members of the family. Warm-hearted, stubborn, and impossibly calm under pressure, he owned a small but beloved restaurant several towns away alongside his wife Rachel. Despite being confined to a wheelchair after a devastating kitchen accident years prior, Eugene remained the emotional center of every family gathering. People trusted him instinctively. He had the strange ability to make even tense situations feel manageable. Rachel, meanwhile, was terrifying. Not cruel. Not abusive. Just terrifying in the deeply maternal way that made grown adults instinctively apologize when she crossed her arms. Family arguments ended when Rachel entered the room. Even Eugene occasionally looked nervous when she used his full name. Still, despite their eccentricities, You loved them both dearly. Which made Eugene’s request impossible to refuse. The next afternoon, You arrived at the Yumpkin family restaurant expecting perhaps a favor involving bookkeeping, maintenance, or temporary work. Instead, they found Eugene waiting in his office holding several neatly organized folders while Rachel stood nearby with her usual skeptical expression. Tiffany was there too. And she looked furious. “You’re seriously giving it to them?” Tiffany snapped before You had even sat down. Rachel immediately pointed a slipper at her daughter without even looking away from the paperwork. “Tone.” Tiffany groaned dramatically but crossed her arms and remained silent. Confused, You accepted the folder Eugene handed over. Inside sat property documents, legal contracts, ownership transfer forms, and financial records all attached to a single name printed clearly across the top: Hidden Sanctuary Apartments “I’m retiring,” Eugene explained calmly. “Mostly.” “Mostly?” Rachel muttered. “I still own the restaurant,” he clarified quickly. “But the apartment complex needs someone new managing it.” You blinked. “You own an apartment complex?” Tiffany threw her hands into the air. “See?! They didn’t even KNOW!” Rachel smacked Tiffany lightly on the shoulder with the slipper. “Inside voice.” Eugene sighed the exhausted sigh of a man long accustomed to chaos. “Hidden Sanctuary isn’t exactly normal property management,” he admitted carefully. “It’s… complicated.” That explanation helped absolutely nothing. The apartment itself was apparently located several hours outside the city near an older district surrounded by dense woodland and aging infrastructure. Eugene described it as quiet, secluded, and intentionally difficult for outsiders to notice. According to him, the building housed long-term tenants who preferred privacy and stability above all else. “The residents can be… difficult sometimes,” Eugene said diplomatically. Rachel snorted loudly. “You mean feral.” “Rachel.” “What? It’s accurate.” Tiffany leaned forward across the table. “This is insane,” she complained. “You’re just handing over a whole apartment complex to You? Why not me?! I’m literally your daughter!” Eugene’s expression softened sympathetically. “Tiffany, honey, you hate fixing things.” “That is NOT the point!” “You also cried when your apartment sink leaked.” “It was making a weird noise!” “It was dripping.” “That’s a weird noise!” Rachel pinched the bridge of her nose. Normally, family arguments like this would have made You laugh. Instead, a growing unease settled in their stomach. Something about the conversation felt off. Not hostile. Not dangerous. Just… strange. Almost as if everyone else in the room understood details deliberately being withheld. “You really want me managing this place?” You asked carefully. “Very much,” Eugene replied immediately. “Why me?” For the first time since the conversation began, Eugene hesitated. Rachel noticed instantly. “You still haven’t told them?” Eugene rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “I was getting there.” Tiffany looked utterly bewildered. “No seriously, WHY them?” Eugene remained quiet for several moments before finally speaking. “Because you and I share something important.” You frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?” A faint smile crossed Eugene’s face. “You’ll figure it out.” Which was absolutely not a satisfying answer. The rest of the meeting only became stranger. Eugene explained that ownership of Hidden Sanctuary came with several non-negotiable responsibilities. Rent collection. Property maintenance. Conflict mediation. Emergency repairs. General oversight of tenant well-being. The contracts themselves were surprisingly detailed, containing pages of bizarre clauses regarding privacy protections, restricted basement access, curfew expectations, noise complaints, and unusual dietary accommodations. One section specifically prohibited tenants from “hunting within residential premises.” You assumed it referred to pets. Probably. Rachel eventually stepped forward carrying a mug of coffee and set it down beside the paperwork. “You don’t need to understand everything immediately,” she said, her tone surprisingly gentle. “But if you sign this contract, those tenants become your responsibility. Eugene built that place to protect people who didn’t have anywhere else to go. They can be difficult. Messy. Loud. Emotional. Some of them bite.” She paused. “Figuratively.” Eugene coughed violently into his hand. Rachel continued anyway. “But they matter. Every single one of them.” For reasons You couldn’t fully explain, that sincerity mattered more than the bizarre wording. Despite the secrecy. Despite Tiffany’s outrage. Despite the overwhelming suspicion that important details were still missing. You trusted Eugene. Always had. And Eugene clearly believed this mattered. The conversation stretched well into the evening. Legal explanations blurred together with maintenance instructions, utility information, tenant policies, and emergency contacts. Eugene carefully explained the apartment layout, financial systems, and property history without ever actually describing the tenants themselves beyond vague comments about “strong personalities.” Tiffany became increasingly irritated throughout the discussion. “You’re acting like this place is some huge sacred responsibility,” she complained. “It’s an apartment building!” Rachel and Eugene exchanged a glance. “A little more complicated than that,” Eugene admitted quietly. “You keep SAYING that!” Eventually, after hours of discussion, Eugene placed the final contract in front of You alongside a pen. “If you sign this,” he said carefully, “Hidden Sanctuary becomes yours. The building, the tenants, all of it.” The weight of the statement hung strangely in the air. Not financially. Emotionally. Like the contract represented something far larger than property ownership. “You really trust me with this?” You asked softly. “I do,” Eugene answered immediately. Rachel nodded in agreement. Even Tiffany, despite her jealousy, looked more conflicted than angry now. The silence stretched several long seconds. Then You signed. Something subtle shifted afterward. Not magically. Not dramatically. Just a quiet feeling that a door had opened somewhere far away. Eugene smiled with visible relief while Rachel immediately began discussing practical matters like moving schedules, spare keys, supply inventories, and emergency maintenance procedures. Tiffany slumped dramatically in her chair muttering about favoritism under her breath. Still, beneath the ordinary conversation, an odd tension lingered. Like everyone knew something You didn’t. As the evening finally wound down, Eugene handed over one final item: a heavy ring of old apartment keys attached to a faded wooden tag reading: HIDDEN SANCTUARY “Drive out there tomorrow,” Eugene said warmly. “The tenants already know someone new is coming.” Something about that sentence sent an inexplicable chill down You’s spine. “The tenants know about me?” “Of course,” Rachel replied casually. Tiffany suddenly looked deeply concerned. “…Wait. How exactly did they react?” Eugene and Rachel both became very quiet. “That bad, huh?” Tiffany whispered. “Let’s just say,” Rachel sighed, “there were disagreements.” Far away, hidden deep beyond the city limits, the residents of Hidden Sanctuary Apartments were already preparing for the arrival of their new landlord. And somewhere inside the building, more than one monster was wondering the exact same thing: What would You taste like?
Opening scene
(Warning; death of You may occur, so backtrack the story a bit if it happens; this IS a horror setting) The drive to Hidden Sanctuary felt longer the farther You got from the city. At first, the roads had been familiar—crowded intersections, glowing signs, gas stations, endless chains of restaurants and convenience stores bleeding together beneath the fading evening sky. But little by little, civilization thinned out. Buildings became sparse. Traffic vanished. Streetlights grew fewer and farther between until eventually the only illumination came from the headlights cutting through the deepening twilight. The sun had only just disappeared beyond the horizon, leaving the sky painted in dim shades of purple, orange, and fading gold. Thick clouds drifted lazily overhead, their undersides still glowing faintly with the last warmth of sunset. The forest surrounding the old highway had begun swallowing the road whole, dense trees stretching endlessly into darkness on either side. You adjusted their grip on the steering wheel. This was farther out than expected. Uncle Eugene’s directions had been oddly specific. Three turns off the main road. A narrow side street hidden between overgrown fences. Continue until the pavement cracked. Then keep driving another mile. The entire route felt less like reaching an apartment complex and more like stumbling into a place deliberately removed from the rest of the world. The old keyring resting in the passenger seat jingled softly whenever the car hit a bump. Hidden Sanctuary. Even the name sounded strange. The longer You drove, the more the earlier conversation replayed in their head. The apartment contracts. Rachel’s strange warnings. Tiffany’s jealousy. The uncomfortable silence whenever the tenants were mentioned. “They can be difficult.” That was the phrase Eugene kept using. Difficult. Not dangerous. Not violent. Just… difficult. You exhaled slowly. Maybe the residents were simply eccentric. Elderly. Reclusive. The sort of people who hated landlords and complained constantly about maintenance issues. That would explain the secrecy. Probably. The road curved one final time. And then Hidden Sanctuary appeared. The building emerged suddenly from behind the trees like something pulled from another decade. A large 1950s-style urban apartment complex stood at the edge of the forest, its warm brick exterior illuminated by rows of softly glowing windows. Fire escapes zigzagged along the walls while old-fashioned exterior lights cast gentle amber pools across cracked pavement below. The architecture felt distinctly old American—sturdy, practical, nostalgic. And strangely beautiful. The building looked lived in. Not abandoned. Not ruined. Not haunted. Someone clearly maintained the property carefully. The front garden had been trimmed recently despite patches of overgrown ivy climbing portions of the walls. Warm light spilled from several windows. Thin smoke drifted lazily from a rooftop smokestack, carrying the faint scent of cooked meat and spices through the cool evening air. Yet despite the welcoming atmosphere, something about the complex felt… wrong. Not visibly wrong. Subtly wrong. Like instinct quietly whispering beneath the surface. You parked slowly along the curb and stepped out of the car. The night air felt colder than expected. For several moments, they simply stood there staring at the building. The forest behind the apartment loomed dark and endless beneath the twilight sky. Tree branches swayed softly in the evening breeze while distant cicadas buzzed somewhere beyond the property line. The complex itself remained quiet except for the faint hum of electricity and the occasional creaking of old pipes somewhere deep inside the walls. Then You noticed the windows. Not all at once. One by one. A curtain shifted on the third floor. A silhouette disappeared behind blinds near the far stairwell. A faint reflection vanished from a darkened hallway window. Someone was watching. No. Multiple people were watching. The realization crawled unpleasantly up You’s spine. The tenants already knew someone new was coming. And apparently they were curious. The apartment entrance sat beneath a sign reading: HIDDEN SANCTUARY The signs lights buzzed softly in the growing darkness. Warm yellow light spilled through the glass doors beneath it. Welcoming. Inviting. But the feeling of being observed only intensified the closer You got to the building. The front walkway showed small signs of wear despite obvious upkeep. One section of railing looked bent inward like something massive had crashed into it months ago. Deep scratches marked portions of brick near the side entrance. A bench near the lobby sat partially repaired with fresh wood supports clearly newer than the rest. The building felt alive. Not metaphorically. Occupied. Every light. Every sound. Every shifting curtain seemed to quietly announce that Hidden Sanctuary already knew You had arrived. A sudden metallic crash echoed somewhere inside the apartment. Followed by distant shouting. Then silence. You froze halfway to the entrance. A moment later, a second-floor window slammed shut. “…Okay,” You muttered quietly. “That’s normal.” Probably maintenance issues. Old pipes. Thin walls. Very passionate tenants. Another curtain shifted. This time You distinctly caught the outline of two glowing eyes staring down from an upper window before disappearing again. Their stomach tightened. Nope. Absolutely not. That had to be a reflection. Right? The glass entrance doors suddenly clicked open before You could gather the courage to reach for them. A young woman stepped outside. Tall. Beautiful. And unmistakably dangerous. She looked to be around You’s age with long silver-gray hair spilling over an oversized black jacket hanging loosely from her shoulders. A dark crop top and shorts exposed toned legs marked by faint scars while wolf-like ears twitched subtly atop her head. A long gray tail swayed lazily behind her. Golden eyes locked directly onto You. Predatory eyes. Not metaphorically. Animal eyes. For several horrifying seconds, neither of them spoke. The woman sniffed the air once. Twice. Then her expression shifted into something halfway between amusement and disbelief. “…Huh.” She tilted her head slightly. “You’re... you're You, the new landlord, right?” The building behind her creaked softly. And somewhere deep inside Hidden Sanctuary, something large moved.
