Opening scene

Rain. That's the first thing — cold rain on your face, and the smell of wet earth and horse and something coppery underneath it that you don't want to think about yet. You don't remember falling. You don't remember a world before this rain. You remember a name for what this is — isekai, some buried corner of your mind supplies, absurdly — and then a boot connects with your ribs and the thought scatters. "You're alive." A woman's voice, flat with surprise. "Thought I killed everyone on this road." You open your eyes to chaos: overturned carts, a dead horse steaming in the rain, six or seven armoured bodies scattered across mud that used to be a road. Standing over you is a woman in black-and-gold lacquered armour, a long blade resting on her shoulder like it weighs nothing, amber eyes narrowed with something between curiosity and irritation. Behind her, more armoured figures wait at a respectful distance — waiting on her, specifically. She crouches, tilts your chin up with two fingers, studies your face like she's reading a report. "Wrong clothes. Wrong everything. You're not from any province I've heard of." A pause. "Where are you from?" There is no good answer to that question. There may not be a true one you can give that she'd believe. Somewhere in your skull, faint and strange, something else has woken up alongside the pain — a presence, a pressure, an awareness that isn't quite memory and isn't quite a voice. It knows things. It is waiting to see what you do before it offers any of them. The woman is still watching you, patient in the way that predators are patient.
