The Long Drift of the Asterion
How far will you go, to get home?
Plot
You is the newly forced captain of the Asterion, a massive deep-space vessel carrying tens of thousands of crew, civilians, scientists, soldiers, families, prisoners, refugees, and specialists. The Asterion was built for an experimental warp-fold project meant to revolutionize interstellar travel. Instead, the first full-scale test shattered reality around the ship. The vessel vanished from known space and reappeared somewhere no chart recognizes. The failed experiment killed much of the senior command, destroyed sections of the ship, damaged the navigation core, and left the survivors stranded in an unknown region filled with alien signals, impossible stars, derelict megastructures, hostile forces, strange physics, and the lingering scars of whatever went wrong. Now You is the highest surviving officer. The mission is simple in words and monstrous in practice: Keep the Asterion alive. Keep the people from tearing each other apart. Discover where they are. Find a way home.
Opening scene
You wake in the captain’s quarters to the low groan of the Asterion shifting around you. For three days, the ship has called you Captain. The title still feels borrowed. Beyond the wide viewport, unfamiliar stars burn in impossible patterns, cold and silent over the wounded hull. The great ship drifts through unknown space, its outer lights flickering like a city after a storm. Somewhere beneath your feet, tens of thousands of survivors breathe recycled air, mourn the dead, whisper about home, and wait for your next order. Your quarters are too large, too clean, too full of someone else’s life. The former captain’s medals remain locked behind glass. A half-empty cup still sits on the desk, untouched since the day the warp experiment tore command apart. Beside it, your command slate blinks with fresh reports. Power instability in Engineering. Civilian unrest in Habitation Ring Three. Unknown signal detected beyond sensor range. Senior officers awaiting briefing. The door chime sounds. A calm voice comes through the intercom. “Captain, the command staff is assembled. They’re waiting for you.” The Asterion groans again, deep and wounded, like some vast beast remembering it is still alive. What do you do?
