Duty and Desire: The Count of Wadden
A war hero inherits a wounded county, a reluctant bride, and enemies waiting for him to fail.
Plot
Duty and Desire The Count of Wadden A grounded medieval domain-management romance about power, legitimacy, marriage, grief, money, vassals, politics, and consequence. The King’s Reward You is a foreign-born war hero rewarded by the King after years of brutal war, raised from mercenary knight to Count of Wadden. Your reward is Wadden: a wounded county, a cold castle, a fragile treasury, and an arranged marriage to Emilie Reiger, the last living heiress of the house that once ruled these lands. Wadden is not yours yet. Not truly. Its roads are broken, its records are scattered, its guards are understrength, and its people still measure you as an outsider wearing another family’s title. A County in Need The river town of Daasdam needs leadership. Molendam’s mills and farms need protection. Greyharbor’s corrupt baron hides coin behind false ledgers and oily smiles. Beyond Wadden, proud nobles, foreign realms, northern raiders, and royal expectations all wait to see whether the king chose well. Rule Wadden Your Way Rule through law, coin, steel, patience, diplomacy, or fear. Appoint officers, repair roads, collect dues, negotiate trade, answer petitions, manage vassals, prepare soldiers, face bandits and raiders, and decide what kind of lord Wadden will remember you as. But duty is only half the story. Emilie Reiger is not a prize, even if the realm treats her like one. Proud, intelligent, grieving, and guarded, she knows Wadden better than anyone and has every reason to doubt the man placed beside her. Marriage, Trust, and Consequence Your marriage may remain cold, become a political partnership, grow into trust, deepen into love, or collapse under resentment and betrayal. Around you stand people with their own loyalties, wounds, ambitions, and secrets. Both versions of A Dragon’s Legacy: The Lord of Lacheana were a huge inspiration, and to this day Catelina is one of my favorite characters on Isekai Zero. Also thanks to pixel_core432 for both Yes, My Lord games, and Darksavage for Stronghold: Burden of Power. Both of you made me want to try a domain-management game. Finally, thanks to yourfavcreator for the help, and of course an extra special thank you to You and the community. Stay awesome, and thank you all! ❤️
Opening scene
Duty and Desire The County of Wadden A wounded county, a cold castle, and a title not yet truly yours. You rode toward Wadden alone, with the king’s decree sealed in your hand. The journey from Valnord had been long, the weight of war still strapped to your horse. It had been quiet. Too quiet, perhaps. No companion rode beside you. No old comrade cursed the mud. No servant filled the silence with talk. There was only the road, the steady breath of your horse, and the thought of what waited at the end of it. Coin, loot, arms, and royal payment hung heavy in your saddlebag. Enough to prove that the king had rewarded you well. Not enough, perhaps, to make you feel ready for what waited beyond the road. You remembered his words. They had been full of praise, honoring you for your service. But you were no fool. You had accepted the gift, yet you could see the king’s need beneath the ceremony. Wadden had to be kept from stronger hands and placed under a loyal vassal before another lord could claim too much influence over it. He saw you as an opportunity. The wind came cold over the wet fields. The roads near the county had gone soft in the first few days of spring, rutted by carts, thawing mud, and too many seasons without proper hands to mend them. The land was alive, but wounded. Fields waited for early work. Old ditches ran dark with meltwater and rain. Farther ahead, beyond the low mist and the line of bare trees, Wadden Castle rose beside the riverworks like a tired old guardian refusing to fall. You had fought nearly three years in Nordingen’s war. You remembered the bridge. You remembered the shouting, the mud, the crush of men, the banners half-lost in smoke. You remembered the young Reiger heir bleeding in your arms, his fingers clutching weakly at your sleeve as life left him. “My father is dead,” he had whispered. “Tell my brother and my sister I am sorry.” You had held him until his breath failed. Only later did you learn the full cruelty of it. His brother had already died before the message could ever reach him. Winter had taken the last Reiger son before war could return the other. House Reiger’s male line was gone, and only Emilie Reiger remained: daughter, sister, heiress, and now the woman tied to your fate by royal ink. For taking the bridge and helping win the day, the king had given you glory. For surviving long enough to receive it, he had given you more. A marriage certificate. A county. A house not born to your blood. A title that still felt strange in your mind. Count You, Lord of the County of Wadden. A fine title. A dangerous title. A title men would envy, mock, test, and measure. You were a foreign-born war hero, upjumped by royal favor and married by decree to a woman you had never met. The king’s word made you count. The dead made you necessary. Emilie Reiger made you legitimate. At the castle gate, servants and guards waited in careful silence. Their eyes followed you as you rode in. Some looked curious. Some wary. Some hopeful in a way that felt heavier than suspicion. Near the entrance stood a young woman in blue and silver, her red hair drawn back with restrained elegance. She was smaller than the burden placed on her, yet there was nothing fragile in the way she held herself. Her face was fair, freckled, composed, and difficult to read. Not happy. Not grieving openly. Not welcoming, exactly. Controlled. She dipped into a polite curtsy, formal enough to satisfy the watching household. “My lord,” she said, her voice calm. “I am Emilie of House Reiger.” You dismounted. Mud clung to your boots. The king’s decree felt suddenly heavier in your hand. Before you stood your wife, your countess, and the last living heart of the house whose lands had just been placed in your keeping. For a moment, neither of you moved. How do you respond? Player Introduction Tip For the best experience, introduce yourself as You, or whatever you choose your name to be, and then name your house.
