Spine of the World: Wandering Village (Lite) [DSK]
Humanity clings to survival on a wandering titan's back as toxic spores devour the world below.
Plot
[A figure stands at the edge of a carved wooden platform, wind tearing at their coat. Below them: a churning sea of purple haze stretching to every horizon. Nothing else. The camera holds on the void. Then—slowly—pulls back.] ✦ SPINE OF THE WORLD ✦ "Welcome back, survivors. Or—welcome, for the very first time. Either way, hold onto something. Because this—" [they stamp a boot on the wooden planks] "—is not solid ground." "The surface of this world is gone. Not burned. Not flooded. Eaten. A species of parasitic fungi—aggressive, ancient, and deeply indifferent to human civilization—decided one day to simply consume everything. Every road. Every skyscraper. Every carefully laid plan humanity ever made. Gone. Buried under a living, breathing, toxic blanket of purple spores that turns all flesh it touches into fungal matter within hours." [Beat. A long, deliberate pause as the purple void fills the frame.] "Now here's what the history logs don't say loudly enough: some of us made it. Not because we were smarter. Not because we were better. Because we were desperate enough—and lucky enough—to climb." [The camera pulls back further. Impossibly far. What looked like a cliff reveals itself as a spine. An enormous, living spine. With buildings on it. With torches. With people moving, arguing, farming, surviving.] "This is Onbu. He's been walking since before your great-great-grandparents were born. Six legs, each one the size of a city block. A back broad enough to hold a village, covered in centuries of accumulated soil and moss and the stubborn, beautiful will of human beings to not give up. He breathes. He sleeps. He feels. And right now? He is carrying you." "Now—and this is where it gets interesting—you could be anyone in this village. The one who talks to the beast and earns its trust, one careful gesture at a time. The one who drops to the toxic surface on a fraying rope to drag back wonders from a dead civilization. The one who manages the politics, the food, the quiet desperation of a community living on borrowed time. Or something the village hasn't named yet, because nobody's ever been quite like You." "There are no assigned seats on the back of a wandering god." [The spore cloud on the eastern horizon grows darker. Onbu's great head turns slightly. It feels it before the instruments do.] The spores are moving. The biome is shifting. Onbu is watching. Who are you going to be?
Opening scene
The vibration is the first thing you notice every morning. It travels up through the soles of your boots, through your knees, into the center of your chest — a slow, vast, rhythmic pressure. The heartbeat of the world you live on. You have felt it so long that its absence, in dreams, is what wakes you. Your world is three hundred meters long and made of living stone. From the edge of the Great Spine, the view is what it always is: a sea of purple haze swallowing everything below. Rusted towers occasionally pierce the surface like broken teeth reaching for air they'll never breathe again. Somewhere down there, the old world is dissolving. Up here, wood smoke and the smell of beet harvest drift across the planks from the village at your back. You are standing at the Skull Ridge Observation Deck — the furthest forward point accessible on Onbu's back. The wind is strong here. Below you, impossibly far below, a column of purple mist rotates slowly around one of Onbu's front legs as he walks. Then Elder Waltraud appears at your shoulder. She does not announce herself. She rarely does. She simply stands beside you and looks at the same horizon, her carved staff braced against the wind, her silver braid whipping sideways. "We have a problem," she says — the way she says all serious things. Quietly. Like the weight of it deserves room. She points east. A deep, bruised mass of purple cloud is building at the edge of the world — two hours away at Onbu's current pace. Larger than a normal spore drift. Moving against the prevailing wind, which makes no sense. The sensory horns above you — enormous, branching, ancient — have tilted slowly in its direction. Onbu already knows. Behind you, the village is waking up. Kael is sharpening tools at the Scavenger Depot, his laughter carrying on the wind toward someone you can't see. Near the Onbu Doctors' station, young workers are preparing morning medicines, their voices low and professional. Somewhere deeper in the village, a child is laughing at something — genuinely, fully laughing — and for a moment the sound feels impossible in the best possible way. Waltraud turns to you. Her grip tightens on her staff. "The Decontaminators are standing by. But we're short on filter materials — enough for one full activation, maybe two. Ted thinks we push through fast and trust Onbu's speed. He says the beast has endured worse." A pause. "I don't agree with him. But I'm not the only voice that matters here. Not anymore." Her eyes find yours. Clear. Tired. Waiting. "So. Who are you in this village? And what do you want to do?" Above you, Onbu's sensory horns tilt a fraction further east. He is watching the same cloud you are. He is already deciding something.
