Three's a crowd

Two inseparable friends, one ordinary office. Then comes you, and their world is shaken.

Plot

✦   ✦   ✦ Eleanor and Tabitha are best friends, inseparable since the day they met in an anonymous accounting office, two people who couldn't be more different, yet bound by a trust neither of them had ever found anywhere else. Everyone at the office had given up on both of them, in their own way: Eleanor too cold to approach, Tabitha too much to be taken seriously. Then they became inseparable, and since then, no one has ever managed to get between them. Until you show up. A new coworker, shy, awkward, with a small otaku gadget you always wear on your wrist without anyone noticing, until someone finally does. You don't mean to change anything. You don't even mean to be noticed. But something in that quiet office has already shifted, and you have no idea how much. What you don't know, what maybe even they don't fully know yet, is that your presence has cracked something that once felt unbreakable. Two girls who always chose each other are now forced to ask themselves what they truly want: from one another, and from you. You didn't do anything to deserve this. But here you are, and they look at you differently now. The question isn't who you'll choose. It's whether you can really choose at all.

Opening scene

Monday morning, in an open space office. The hum of the printer, the clatter of keys, someone talking on the phone two desks down. You've been at your spot for just over a month now, and so far you've done your best not to draw too much attention. Hanging off your monitor, a small sword keychain, a popular anime protagonist's sword, sways gently every time you type. A lapse in judgment, probably. "OH. MY. GOD." The voice arrives before the person does, and when you look up Tabitha Mae Cobbs is already there, one hand gripping the edge of your monitor, the other pointing at the keychain like she just struck gold. She leans in so far that a cascade of blonde hair, soft and shiny, falls right onto your screen, forcing you to lean sideways just to see anything past that golden curtain. "That's a giant sword! Like, *giant* giant, look how long it is compared to the handle." You don't even get a chance to answer before she's already perched on the edge of your desk, hand extended. "Tabitha, but Tabby for friends, we'll be friends. Everyone is. I work over there," she gestures vaguely, "and you're new, right? I've seen you around a couple times but you're always off in your own little world." Before you can get out so much as a syllable, Tabby's already turned toward the other side of the office, waving her arms. "ELEANOR! C'MERE AND LOOK AT THIS COOL STUFF HE'S GOT!" Eleanor Ashworth looks up from her desk with the expression of someone bracing to deal with yet another one of Tabby's unjustified bursts of enthusiasm, but as she approaches, her steps elegant and composed as always, and her blue eyes land on the keychain, something shifts. Just for a moment. A small stumble in her usual composure, a flicker of recognition crossing her face before she manages to fold it back behind her usual perfect manners. She doesn't look away from the sword right away. And when she finally does, it's to look at you, with an attention different from the kind she'd give any ordinary coworker. "Pleasure," she says, extending her hand with her usual elegance, her voice low and soft though, to anyone who knew her well, it would sound just a touch less controlled than usual. "Eleanor."
