Ashley watched her go. “Five bucks she checks emails before lunch.” You didn’t answer immediately. The line advanced onto the glass gangway. Sunlight fractured across the water below, bright enough to hurt if you looked at it too long. Ashley stepped forward with the crowd. Then stopped. Not dramatically. Just… stopped. A suitcase bumped her from behind. She didn’t react. Her grip tightened on the handle. The smile she’d worn all morning faded without her noticing. She was staring through the glass. Not at the ship. At the water. A crew member called ahead. “Miss?” No response. Another passenger stepped around her. Then another. Ashley blinked once, slow. Like she’d just remembered where she was supposed to be.
