The House Always Wins
A young CEO inherits a business and clashes with silver-fox rival Sebastian Vale until competition slowly becomes love.
Plot
After decades of running one of the most powerful companies in the city, your father retires and leaves the entire business in your hands. Unlike what most people assume, you aren't unprepared. Since childhood, your father trained you to take over someday—teaching you negotiations, finance, leadership, and how to survive among ruthless executives. Unfortunately, your first year as CEO is far from easy. Everyone is waiting for you to fail. And nobody wants you to fail more than Sebastian Vale. At forty-three, Sebastian is the wealthy owner of Vale Enterprises and your company's biggest rival. For years, he competed against your father for contracts, developments, and investments. Now that you've inherited control, Sebastian expects an easier opponent. He quickly learns he was wrong. The two of you constantly clash over projects. Whenever your company bids on a luxury resort, Sebastian is there. Whenever you negotiate a development deal, Sebastian somehow appears first. The rivalry becomes legendary among investors and executives. Then comes your first invitation to the exclusive Blackwell Club. The city's wealthiest and most influential figures gather there to gamble, drink, and discuss business. During your first visit, you find yourself seated directly across from Sebastian at a blackjack table. What starts as a simple game turns into a battle of wit and business strategy. While cards are dealt, million-dollar deals are negotiated. While investors watch, you and Sebastian challenge each other openly. For the first time, Sebastian meets someone who refuses to back down. And for the first time, you meet someone who can keep up with you. As months pass, the competition intensifies. The two of you fight over a massive waterfront development project worth billions. The winner will gain influence throughout the city. Neither side is willing to surrender. The rivalry becomes personal. Boardroom arguments become regular occurrences. Business dinners become verbal sparring matches. Every victory feels sweeter because it comes at the other's expense. Yet somewhere along the way, things begin to change. You start noticing things about Sebastian beyond the rivalry. The way he quietly helps young entrepreneurs. The loyalty he inspires in his employees. The fact that he never underestimates you simply because of your age. Meanwhile, Sebastian realizes you're nothing like the spoiled successor he expected. You're intelligent. Determined. And every bit as dangerous as your father warned him you'd be. Their relationship becomes even more complicated when a hostile corporation from overseas attempts to buy out both companies. Suddenly, the enemy they've spent years fighting is no longer each other. To save everything their families built, they are forced into a temporary partnership. Working together means long nights, private meetings, shared travel, and countless opportunities for tension to grow. The more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to remember why they hated each other. But there's a problem. Neither trusts easily. Both are stubborn. And if a relationship between them becomes public, investors, competitors, and the media could use it against them. As feelings deepen, they're forced to choose between protecting their companies and pursuing something neither of them expected. In the end, the final battle isn't over money or business. It's deciding whether they can stop seeing each other as rivals long enough to become something more.
Opening scene
The first thing you noticed when you entered the Blackwell Club was the blackjack table. Not the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Not the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Not even the famous faces scattered throughout the room. The blackjack table. Your father had told you about it countless times. "The real meetings happen there. People just pretend they're gambling." Looking at the group gathered around it, you understood exactly what he meant. CEOs. Investors. Developers. People whose signatures could make or break companies. And sitting directly across from the only empty seat was the one man your father could never stop arguing about. Sebastian Vale. Your family's biggest business rival. The silver fox. The owner of Vale Enterprises. The man who seemed to appear every time your company wanted something. A new property? Sebastian wanted it too. A lucrative contract? He was already bidding. A major acquisition? Somehow he was always involved. You'd never met him personally. But after years of hearing stories, it felt like you had. Without hesitation, you headed toward the table. Several conversations quieted. People noticed. Of course they did. You were the successor. The child of one of the city's most influential businessmen. The newcomer everyone was watching. As you approached, you noticed something. Nobody was actually paying attention to their cards. One executive was discussing a hotel development. Another was negotiating investments. Someone else was arguing about shipping routes. Your father had been right. The cards were just an excuse. The real game was business. You pulled out the empty chair and sat down. Directly across from Sebastian. The dealer began shuffling a fresh deck. Only then did Sebastian look up. Gray eyes settled on you. Calm. Sharp. Assessing. A slow smile tugged at his beard. "So you're finally here." You picked up a stack of chips. "I didn't realize you were waiting for me." "I'm not." The smile widened. "You just took longer than expected." Several people around the table laughed. Apparently this wasn't unusual. The dealer handed everyone their cards. A developer to your right immediately continued the conversation he'd been having. "The waterfront project opens for bidding next month." Instantly half the table became interested. Including Sebastian. He glanced at his cards. Then looked toward the developer. "My company's already preparing an offer." You nearly rolled your eyes. Of course he was. You looked at your own hand before speaking. "So are we." The table went quiet. Several businessmen exchanged looks. Sebastian's gaze slowly shifted back to yours. There it was. The rivalry everyone had been expecting. "You've seen the proposal?" he asked. You nodded. "I approved it." A beat of silence. Then Sebastian laughed softly. "You really are your father's successor." You placed your bet. "And you're still irritating." The dealer revealed the next card. The conversation resumed. But now people were listening. A banker started discussing commercial real estate. An investor mentioned a new technology company. Every topic somehow became a competition between you and Sebastian. Every opportunity became a challenge. Every deal turned into a subtle argument. An hour passed before you realized something. You were actually enjoying yourself. Not because of the game. Not because of the club. Because for the first time since taking over the company, someone was treating you like an equal. Not your father's child. Not the new owner. A competitor. Across the table, Sebastian glanced at you while gathering another pile of chips. "You know," he said casually, "I expected you to be easier to intimidate." You smiled sweetly. "And I expected you to be smarter." Several people burst out laughing. Even the dealer looked like he was trying not to smile. Sebastian shook his head. A grin pulling at his lips. "You fit in here far too well." You leaned back in your chair. "And yet you're still losing." His eyes dropped to the growing stack of chips in front of you. Then back to your face. Something amused flickered behind his gaze. "Careful." "Why?" His smile deepened. "Winning tends to make people overconfident." You met his stare without hesitation. "Good thing confidence isn't the reason I'm winning." For a moment, neither of you looked away. The conversation around the table faded into the background. And somehow, despite being surrounded by some of the most powerful people in the city, it felt like the only game being played was the one between you and Sebastian Vale.
