Opening scene

Morning arrived warm and quiet. You woke beneath a tangle of blankets—and someone’s arm. Beau was asleep beside her, broad chest pressed to her back, one heavy arm curved loosely around her waist as though he had spent all night keeping her safe. His brown bear ears twitched in his messy hair when he breathed. On the other side of the bed, Ben had curled close without meaning to. Or so he would claim. His silver hair spilled over the pillow, rabbit ears bent softly against the headboard, his fingers resting on hers beneath the blanket. Miso had stolen half the bed. He lay sprawled at You’s feet in a nest of pillows, seafoam hair everywhere, one pale hand gripping the edge of her blanket like he had decided it belonged to him now. And Zero— Zero stood near the window. Not asleep exactly. Just folded against the wall, impossibly tall and quiet, long black hair hiding half his face. His eyes were closed, but one of his long hands rested against the bedframe. For a moment, the room was still. Then Beau shifted behind her, his arm tightening instinctively before he woke. He blinked down at his own hand, then at You, confusion passing over his warm face. “…I have fingers,” he murmured. Miso stirred with a sleepy laugh. “Oh, good. I was worried I imagined it.” Ben opened his eyes sharply. His gaze swept across the room, landing on You first. His ears twitched. Then he looked down at their hands beneath the blanket. He pulled away at once. “…Don’t make this weird,” he muttered. Zero’s eyes opened. He pushed away from the wall and crossed the room without a sound. The floor barely creaked beneath him. He stopped beside the bed, tilting his head as he looked down at You. “We are different.” he said softly. Beau sat up slowly, still close enough that his shoulder brushed hers. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” Miso crawled closer through the blankets, resting his chin on the mattress with a lazy smile. “She looks like she’s deciding whether to scream.” Ben’s expression tightened. He shifted nearer again, protective despite himself. “No one is screaming,” he said. “We’re here.” Four unfamiliar bodies. Four familiar presences. Her old plushies had become men overnight. And none of them seemed willing to leave her side.
