✦ Story Note ✦ Slow-Burn NTL / Netori This is a netori / NTL fantasy story. You are not starting as the strongest man in the room. You are not taking anyone easily. Trust, desire, reputation, and intimacy must be earned slowly — one glance, one choice, one dangerous step at a time. No instant victories. No easy conquests. Everything must be earned. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d2b9659e36d48c84cbcf5.webp) ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d2c0f91f9a79f168095f1.webp) ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d2c5937c3280e3d1ceac5.webp) ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d2cb5192df9ba869f6600.webp)

Golden banners streamed from the marble towers of the Royal Hero Academy. White petals fell from balconies. Noble students filled the upper terraces in polished uniforms, knights lined the ceremonial avenue in perfect ranks, and every window overlooking the Hero’s Honor Balcony was crowded with faces waiting for one man. Evander Valois had returned. You stood below the main staircase with the other low-ranking auxiliaries, dressed in the plain academy tabard assigned to those without rank, title, or proven merit. The fabric was clean, but painfully simple among all the embroidered capes, jeweled collars, polished armor, and saintly robes surrounding you. A silver-haired instructor passed the auxiliary line without slowing. “Keep the lower steps clear,” she said. “Do not block noble students. Do not speak unless addressed. And if anyone from the Hero’s party requires assistance, answer immediately.” A few students nearby laughed softly. “Unranked auxiliaries at the victory ceremony,” one noble boy murmured. “How generous of the academy.” Another replied, “Careful. It might think it belongs here.” The crowd erupted before anyone could answer. Evander appeared at the top of the grand avenue on a white warhorse, sunlight breaking across his navy-and-gold mantle. His armor still carried faint marks from battle, but somehow that only made him look more legendary. Tall, handsome, composed, and smiling as if victory had been inevitable from the beginning. Beside him walked Belinda Caverly, her chestnut ponytail moving in the wind, red-and-gold battle mantle hanging from one shoulder, armor polished but still scarred at the edges. She raised one hand toward the cheering soldiers, laughing brightly when someone shouted her name from the training battlements. Higher on the noble balcony, Feyre Cinderfell watched the procession with a violet-gloved hand resting against the marble rail. She was dressed in deep purple and black silk, her smile elegant enough to look harmless from a distance. Her violet eyes followed Evander first, then the crowd, then the academy staff, measuring every reaction as if the celebration itself were a court document waiting to be signed. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d380570c34c7838e9465b.webp) Then the cathedral doors opened. The cheering softened. Dahlia Ambrose stepped into the sunlight. White and gold moved around her like the academy had saved its gentlest light for her alone. Her honey-blonde hair fell over her shoulders, her saintess robes shimmered with delicate embroidery, and her golden-amber eyes lowered briefly as knights bowed along the stairs. Evander dismounted before the balcony and climbed the steps toward her. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d394ec1c71be833320947.webp) “Saintess Ambrose,” he said warmly, loud enough for the front rows to hear. “I hope the city did not worry too much in my absence.” Dahlia smiled. It was perfect. Soft. Radiant. Public. “Alodias trusts its Hero,” she answered. The crowd applauded. Evander offered his hand. Dahlia placed her fingers over his gauntlet. The gesture was small, ceremonial, and practiced — exactly the kind of image painters would turn into murals before the month ended. But up close, from your place near the lower steps, one detail did not match the rest. Dahlia’s smile held. Her fingers tightened once against Evander’s gauntlet. Only once. A tiny movement, gone almost before anyone could notice. Evander turned toward the cheering crowd, already basking in the celebration, and Dahlia’s gaze drifted past his shoulder for half a second. Not toward the nobles. Not toward the professors. Not toward Feyre or Belinda. Down. Toward the auxiliary line. Toward you. Her eyes met yours for the briefest moment. No recognition. No promise. No secret meaning. Just a flicker of tired golden warmth behind the saintly smile, there and gone beneath the weight of ceremony. Evander followed the direction of her glance. His blue eyes landed on you. For one second, the kingdom’s Hero looked directly at you. There was no hostility in his expression. No jealousy. No suspicion. Barely even curiosity. He looked at you the way someone might look at a candle stand placed too close to a doorway. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d5005e3de6c8a101258d9.webp) Then his smile returned to the crowd. “Come,” Evander said, his voice gentle as he guided Dahlia forward. “They’re waiting for us.” Dahlia moved with him. As she did, a small white-and-gold handkerchief slipped from her sleeve. It drifted down the marble steps, catching sunlight as it fell, before landing near your boots. The cloth smelled faintly of flowers, clean linen, and cathedral incense. A senior attendant snapped her fingers at you. “You. Auxiliary.” Her voice was low and urgent. “Return that to Saintess Ambrose before it is trampled.” Above, Evander and Dahlia had reached the balcony’s center. Belinda was laughing with a group of knights nearby. Feyre’s violet gaze shifted toward the fallen handkerchief, then toward you, her smile sharpening by the smallest degree. Dahlia turned slightly, as if she had noticed something missing. The handkerchief lay at your feet. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/697d05cd9eb8cd2c2a80dd67/6a3d50579149b9de663c3318.webp) The entire city continued cheering. What do you do?
