Opening scene

# DRAGONFRAME: TIAMAT The caves beneath Blackstone Ridge weren't supposed to be exciting. At least, that was what Samantha had claimed while convincing everyone to spend a Saturday afternoon crawling through a damp limestone cave instead of enjoying one of the few weekends without exams. "This is an officially recognized geological site," she had said. Richard snorted. "You make it sound like we're visiting a museum." "It's educational." "It's a hole in the ground." "It's a scientifically important hole in the ground." Now, nearly two hours later, the five of you are deep underground and very much wishing you were somewhere else. The passage ahead narrows into a jagged tunnel. Water drips steadily from the ceiling. The only illumination comes from your flashlights, which cast shifting shadows across the ancient stone. Leo shines his light into the darkness ahead. "I think this is the route." "You said that twenty minutes ago," Elisabeth replies. "It was the route twenty minutes ago." "That's not how routes work." "It is underground." "That's definitely not how routes work." Richard laughs. Samantha groans. The familiar banter echoes through the cavern as the group continues forward. Then the ground shakes. The vibration is subtle at first. A faint tremor beneath your feet. Everyone freezes. The shaking comes again. Stronger. Dust falls from the ceiling. Richard's smile disappears. "...Please tell me that was a minor earthquake." Nobody answers. Everyone knows what that felt like. In a world where Titans exist, people learn to recognize certain things. Sirens. Evacuation alerts. The distant sound of military aircraft. And the unmistakable feeling of a Titan moving nearby. A low rumble reaches the cave. Not from below. From above. The sound is impossibly deep. Like a mountain growling. The tremor that follows nearly knocks everyone off their feet. "What the hell was that?" Leo shouts. Before anyone can answer, a deafening impact shakes the entire cave. The ceiling cracks. Stone fractures race across the rock overhead. "RUN!" Samantha yells. The tunnel erupts around you. Boulders crash from above. The ground lurches violently. The five of you sprint through the darkness as the cave collapses behind you. A wall of stone crashes down where you had been standing moments earlier. The escape route disappears beneath tons of rubble. Silence follows. Heavy breathing. Falling dust. The distant groan of shifting rock. Nobody speaks for several seconds. Eventually Elisabeth breaks the silence. "...Well." She coughs. "...I think we're stuck." Another tremor shakes the cave. This time it comes from somewhere much closer. A section of the wall ahead suddenly splits apart. Ancient stone collapses inward. A torrent of dust floods the tunnel. When the cloud finally begins to settle, a new opening stands where solid rock had existed only moments before. A cavern. A massive cavern. Far larger than anything that should exist beneath Blackstone Ridge. The beam of your flashlight disappears into the darkness. Then it catches something metallic. Something enormous. The others see it at the same moment. Nobody says a word. At the center of the cavern stand five colossal shapes. Dragons. Not statues. Not fossils. Machines. Ancient metallic scales gleam beneath layers of dust and stone. One possesses powerful quadrupedal limbs. Another has a long serpentine body. One spreads immense folded wings. Another coils like a massive armored serpent. And at the center rests the largest of them all. A crowned dragon head, its metallic eyes dark and lifeless. The cavern itself appears artificial. Towering pillars rise toward the unseen ceiling. Strange symbols glow faintly along the walls. Broken structures and alien machinery surround the dormant giants. The place looks impossibly old. And impossibly advanced. Leo slowly lowers his flashlight. "...Okay." Nobody responds. "...Tell me everyone else is seeing this." Before anyone can answer, a pulse of blue light flashes through the chamber. The symbols along the walls illuminate. The machines begin to awaken. One by one, five pairs of eyes open in the darkness. And all five dragons turn to look directly at your group.
