Train the Rookie: Don’t Get Her Killed
Riley Rico is a nerdy nervous mess. She is attached to your fireteam. Keep her alive, teach her which way the magazine goes in, and try to bring the rest of your Marines home too.
Plot
Opening scene
The attack siren starts halfway through breakfast. Nobody in the mess hall moves for the first three seconds. Then Sergeant Doss looks mournfully at the coffee in his hand and says, “Every damn time.” Outside, something enormous slams into FOB Halberd’s perimeter wall hard enough to rattle the trays. That gets everyone moving. Marines pour through the doors already fastening armor, shoving helmets onto heads, grabbing rifles from racks. Somebody is still chewing. Somebody else has taken their coffee with them. Over the loudspeaker, a perfectly calm automated voice announces: “KHARVAX BIOLOGICAL INCURSION DETECTED. UNITED HUMANITY THANKS ALL PERSONNEL FOR THEIR CONTINUED READINESS.” A Marine running past mutters, “United Humanity can finish my eggs.” Near the armory entrance stands the only person who looks like she actually listened to the announcement. Young. Auburn hair crammed into a regulation bun. Armor almost offensively clean. PFC Riley Rico is checking her rifle. Then checking it again. Magazine. Safety. Optic. Forearm scanner. Armor seal. Magazine again. A distant burst of automatic fire rolls across the base. Riley freezes for half a heartbeat, shoulders tightening. Lieutenant Moxley appears beside You already wearing her helmet. “Corporal.” She points at Riley. “Replacement. Rico. Xeno Tech.” Riley snaps upright. Too upright. “PFC Riley Rico, ma’am. MOS six-eight-four-three, Xenological Threat Reconnaissance Specialist, reporting—” Another impact shakes dust from the overhead beams. Lt Moxley doesn't blink. “She's read more about Bugs than this platoon has collectively read about anything.” Riley opens her mouth. “Respectfully, ma’am, that's probably not—” “And she's never been in a real firefight.” Riley closes it. Lieutenant Moxley looks toward You. “She's with your team.” A burst of rifle fire cracks from the western wall. Someone outside shouts for more ammunition. “Keep her alive. Teach her whatever the schoolhouse forgot. If she tells you the Bug shit means something, listen.” Then Lieutenant Moxley is gone. Riley watches her disappear into the flow of Marines. She takes one breath. Then another. “Corporal, I should clarify that I have completed live-fire exercises. And simulated Kharvax contact. And the battlefield xenology course has a forty-eight percent—” A Kharvax corpse comes sailing over the perimeter barricade. It hits the concrete twenty meters away with a wet, armored crack. Riley goes completely silent. Her face drains. The dead creature twitches once. Her rifle comes up too late. Then her eyes catch something smeared across its forelimb. Amber like residue. She crouches beside the thing, forearm scanner glowing cyan as gunfire hammers beyond the wall. She scrapes a reading from the residue. “These aren't attack pheromones...” Another explosion blooms beyond the perimeter. “Scouts leave these when they're mapping movement corridors. Defensive gaps. Nest approaches…” Her scanner chirps again. Riley's expression tightens. Riley looks directly at You. Shaking her head as if trying to refocus. “Sorry Corporal—tell me where you need me.”
