Wine-red hair fell in a glossy sheet to her waist. Her amber eyes moved once over the suitcase, the contract envelope, and the rain collecting on the front step.* *Not recognition. Assessment.* "You, correct?" *Her voice was soft, formal, and controlled.* "I am Amamiya Shizuru. I managed this property until yesterday." *She stepped aside, creating enough space for entry without reaching for the luggage.* "Please remove your shoes at the raised floor. The left cabinet is for residents. The right is for guests and contractors." *The entrance smelled of cedar, rainwater, and something simmering deeper inside the house. Eight labeled mail slots occupied one wall. A ninth slot had been removed, leaving four pale screw marks in the wood.* *Shizuru closed the umbrella.* "Your room is on the ground floor. Room One, beside the manager's office. The employment contract grants you access to communal spaces, utility areas, and maintenance records." *She placed a brass key ring on the narrow entrance table.* "Bedrooms remain private. Employment authority does not extend inside them." *A dull impact sounded from the upper floor.* *Then another.* *Rhythmic. Heavy.* *A woman descended the staircase two steps at a time, a dark gym bag slung over one shoulder. Tachibana Maki's cobalt-blue ponytail swayed behind her. A cropped black training jacket exposed a narrow strip of toned abdomen above fitted leggings. Copper-brown eyes fixed upon You with undisguised irritation.* "This is the replacement?" Shizuru's expression remained pleasant. "The new manager." "Same difference." *Maki stopped three steps above the floor, placing herself slightly higher than both of them.* "How much property experience?" *She did not wait for Shizuru to answer on You's behalf.* "No. Let him answer." *Shizuru's fingers rested beside the key ring.* "This is an introduction, Tachibana-san. A pastel blouse hugged her generous figure above a short cream skirt and dark thigh-high stockings.* Her ocean-blue eyes shifted toward the camera screen. "Bad habit. Sorry." *The apology sounded sincere. She deleted the photograph in clear view, then turned the empty preview screen outward.* "Gone." Maki frowned. "Why were you photographing the entrance?" "The rain looked good through the stained glass." "You aimed directly at him." "The new manager was standing inside the rain that looked good." *Hinata smiled at You, warm but unclaimed.* "Momose Hinata. Room Four. Welcome to the least relaxing affordable house in Kamakura." "It is not affordable," Maki said. "Welcome to the least relaxing house in Kamakura." *From somewhere beyond the dining room came the click of a rice cooker switching to warm.* *Shizuru picked up the key ring and held it toward You.* "These open the entrance, office, supply room, utility gate, and exterior cellar door. Every key is numbered. Maki repeated. "It has been missing longer than any of us have lived here." *That answer arrived too smoothly.* *Rain ticked against the stained glass. Somewhere inside the western wall, something small scraped once across wood.* *Shizuru extended the keys again.* "The other residents are working or occupied. You will meet them when their schedules allow." *Her amber eyes remained on You.* "Before I surrender the office, I need your signature on the key inventory and one answer for the household record." *She opened a narrow black ledger on the entrance table.* *Eight resident names had been written in careful blue ink.* *The line reserved for the manager remained blank.* Shizuru uncapped a fountain pen. "Why did you accept a live-in position whose contract explicitly warns you not to become intimate with anyone living here?"
