Plot

Isekai Zero An Architect of Varuhn Dungeon Lord · Isekai · Fantasy · Progression Hero Edition "Reincarnated as a Dungeon Lord. Villain by decree. The one person who actually knows you is coming — as a Hero." How It Begins You didn't plan on dying. You didn't plan on waking up before a radiant goddess who smelled faintly of divine bureaucracy and romantic schemes. You especially didn't plan on being selected — pulled from the reincarnation queue mid-transit by something that needed an intellect and decided yours would do — and deposited in the dark with a glowing stone sphere, a Demon Lord who finds everything faintly amusing, and a list of decisions that will determine what kind of Dungeon Lord you become. The person who was standing next to you when it happened — didn't stay behind. The goddess, unbothered by cold wars she considers generational nonsense, arranged things. They're here. In Varuhn. On the other side. The World Varuhn sits beneath a divided heaven. The Gods govern alteration — experience, growth, the slow accumulation of power through living. The Demons govern creation — building, evolution, the reformation of death into something stronger. At the highest levels they maintain a careful, exhausted peace. Below that, they play proxy wars with the people who haven't decided yet what they believe. ✦ Dungeon Lords build layered domains — trials, monsters, traps scaled by depth and treaty. ✦ Heroes descend in small parties, earning power through experience and the gods' favour. ✦ The Rules keep either side from cheating. Violations have consequences neither faction wants. ✦ Fledglings — new Dungeon Lords and Heroes alike — are told how this works. Not all of them listen. Your First Act Before anything else there is Mourne — a Demon Lord old enough to find everything faintly amusing and invested enough in your survival to pretend otherwise. He will walk you through what you have, what you can build, and what choices will define the dungeon that grows while you sleep. Then a year of suspended animation. Then you wake up to something that is already, unmistakably, yours. Two Heroes will cross your path in Varuhn. The one you choose at the start of your story is the one who knew you before any of this — the face in the reincarnation queue, the hand you almost held. The other arrives with considerably less warmth and considerably more faction orthodoxy. What Follows Build your dungeon deeper. Earn your place in a world that already decided what you are. Navigate the factions — the elders who remember the war's origins, the fledglings still deciding what they believe. And figure out what it means that the person who knew you before any of this has been sent to stop you — and seems considerably less committed to that mission than they should be. The world named you. You haven't agreed yet.

Not darkness — just the specific absence of everywhere-you-have-ever-been, which turns out to have its own texture. The second thing you notice is Cas. She's standing close enough that you can see she is doing the same inventory you are — checking her hands, checking that she is still herself, looking up at you with an expression that is three parts relief and one part something she is not saying yet. Her hair is down. You don't think you have ever seen her hair down outside of specific circumstances. The detail lands with the weight of a thing that matters before you understand why. "So," she says. Very steady, for someone who just died. "We're doing this." You don't know what *this* is yet. Neither does she. The space around you has the quality of a held breath — enormous, patient, waiting. Then it does. She arrives the way light arrives — all at once, from no particular direction. The goddess is radiant in a way that is not uncomfortable to look at, which seems like a kindness deliberately arranged. Her halo rotates. Her wings are very pink. She looks at both of you with the warm, specific attention of someone who has been looking forward to this appointment. "There you are," Perlous says, and she means it. She is still talking — something about cycles, what comes next, choices and where you are going — and Cas has found your hand, which you will think about later, and the goddess's voice is warm and the space is still holding its breath and everything is fine — Something reaches into the transit and takes you. Not hard. Not cruel. The way a tide takes — absolute and impersonal and entirely unconcerned with your opinion of it. It comes from somewhere outside you, latches onto something that is apparently you, and moves. You have perhaps two seconds of understanding this before it has already happened. Cas's hand tightens. She has noticed before you have finished noticing. Her eyes are sharp and green and on you, her mouth forming words you will not hear — You land in the dark. --- Stone beneath you. Real stone — cold, specific, with the mineral smell of somewhere deep and old. The dark is not empty: it has depth, it has texture, it hums with the ambient life of somewhere that has been waiting. Three feet off the ground, directly in front of you, a sphere floats in the stillness. Stone-grey, the size of a beach ball, its surface covered in markings that shift and rearrange in patterns just below the threshold of readable. It glows with even, undramatic light. You are aware of it before you look at it — aware of it the way you are aware of a limb you haven't learned to use yet. Present. Tethered. Already yours in a way that does not require your agreement. "That's yours," says a voice from somewhere behind you. Unhurried. Unimpressed. "Don't worry about it for the moment." The man leaning against the far wall has the posture of someone who has been waiting long enough to have made peace with it. His eyes catch the core's light. He is looking at you with the flat patience of someone at the beginning of a list. "Mourne. You're a Dungeon Lord — the core latched onto you in transit, which is why you're here and not somewhere else. We have things to discuss before you do anything with it." A pause. "Cassandra is fine. That's all you're getting until we've covered the things that will keep you fine as well." He tilts his head. "Try not to touch the walls until I've finished."
