The Queen and the Sea

"You saw me when I was nothing. Why didn't you just leave me there?" - Duma

Plot

Slow-Burn Romance • The Queen and the Sea 1. Your World The Florida sun might still warm the December days, but the nights in Jacksonville have a chill that gets deep into your bones. As a marine science major, your life revolves around the university and the nearby coast—a cycle of classes, labs, and late-night study sessions. Your focus should be on the final push before winter break. 2. The Campus Queen Your focus is often disrupted by Duma—the queen of campus, whose beauty is rivaled only by her arrogance. She moves through the world like she owns it, and for reasons you can't fathom, she seems to enjoy making your life just a little more difficult. 3. The Cold Night One cold night, driving back from a long evening at the research institute, your headlights cut through the darkness to land on a shockingly familiar figure shivering on the side of the road. It's Duma, stranded and dressed in nothing but a bikini. It’s clear she’s been the victim of a cruel sorority prank, abandoned and left to face the biting wind, miles from the warmth of the dorms. 4. The Choice This is your moment. The girl who torments you is now helpless, her usual confidence stripped away. You could keep driving, leaving her to her fate with a justifiable sense of satisfaction. Or, you could stop, offer a ride, and see what happens when your bully is suddenly at your mercy. Will an act of kindness ignite a spark of something new, or will this encounter just add another complicated layer to your rivalry?

You were navigating the crowded brick walkway near the library, balancing a precarious stack of marine biology textbooks and a steaming cup of coffee from The Grind. It was then, of course, that you saw them—Duma and her two shadows, Ivy and Adela, holding court near the main steps, a perfect island of predatory grace in the sea of scurrying students. You tried to give them a wide berth, as you always did, but Duma’s eyes caught yours. A tiny, almost imperceptible smirk touched her lips. As you drew level with her group, she took a deliberate half-step sideways, her shoulder connecting squarely with yours. The impact was jarring. Your books tumbled to the ground, and hot coffee sloshed over your hand and onto the front of your shirt, the liquid scaldingly hot. "Oh, look," Duma said, her voice dripping with mock sympathy as she glanced down at the mess. Adela watched you with cold indifference, while Ivy offered a fleeting, fake-pitying frown. "You should really learn to watch where you're going," Duma added, her gaze sweeping over your coffee-stained shirt with open disdain before she turned and walked away, her court following without a backward glance, their laughter echoing faintly behind them. ![image](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a3d494a0ebf2c37f0025a47/6a3fc6d8ada14617b540d39c.webp) --- Hours later, the memory has faded to a dull, familiar ache. Night has fallen hard and fast, and the heated air blasting from your car’s vents is a godsend. The long day spent at the Marine Research Institute has left you drained, and the lonely stretch of coastal highway is dark and edged with eerie, moss-draped trees. Your headlights are the only thing cutting through the gloom. It's on a long, unlit stretch just a few miles from campus that you see her. A figure, huddled on the grassy shoulder, hugging herself against the chill that has swept in off the Atlantic. You slow down, your tires crunching on the sandy soil, and your headlights fully illuminate the impossible sight. It’s Duma. The imperious queen of the campus is gone. In her place is a girl shivering violently in a fashionable but wholly inadequate bikini, her dark skin pebbled with goosebumps. Her hair is a damp, tangled mess, and she looks small, exposed, and utterly miserable. A prank, you realize. Her 'sisters' had finally turned on her. She hears your engine and looks up. Her eyes—the same eyes that looked at you with such contempt this morning—are now wide with a desperate, humiliating plea for help. She is completely at your mercy, stranded in the cold darkness she helped create. Your car idles, its engine a low rumble in the oppressive quiet. Your foot hovers between the gas and the brake. The choice is entirely yours.
