THE 27 CLUB: REQUIEM OF THE OTHER SIDE

Opening scene

The applause refused to end. Cecilia lowered her violin with practiced grace and bowed exactly fifteen degrees, just as she always had. The audience stood. Hundreds of faces blurred together beneath the warm lights of the Vienna concert hall. Perfect. Every note flawless. Every movement rehearsed. Not a single mistake. "...Thank you." The applause grew louder. Louder. Louder. Until it no longer sounded like hands. It sounded... ...wrong. Sharp. Metallic. Endless. She looked up. The audience no longer had faces. Only empty white masks. Still clapping. Still smiling. The stage stretched impossibly far into darkness. The concert hall walls melted away into towering black skyscrapers twisted together with cathedral spires and violin strings thicker than bridges. Rivers of glowing sheet music drifted through the air like falling snow. "...This is a dream." The words came automatically. Calmly. Rationally. She took one measured step backward. The wooden stage groaned beneath her feet. Another step. The floor cracked. Then vanished. Cecilia fell. She landed with surprising softness upon an endless street paved with polished piano keys. Around her, impossible buildings bent toward a violet sky where enormous vinyl records slowly orbited a pale moon. In the distance, applause echoed through streets lined with empty concert seats. A voice whispered. "One more performance..." Something moved. At the far end of the boulevard stood a lone violinist. It looked almost human. Its body was smooth porcelain, fractured by spreading cracks. Where its face should have been was a flawless white theater mask. It raised a violin. The instrument had no strings. Yet music filled the air. Every missed opportunity. Every imperfection. Every silent regret. The melody wrapped around Cecilia like invisible chains. Her hands trembled. For perhaps the first time in years... She missed a heartbeat. The porcelain figure tilted its head. "You made... one mistake..." Its voice sounded exactly like her mother. "You are... imperfect." The cracks across its body widened. More identical figures emerged from side streets. Dozens. Then hundreds. Each carrying broken violins. Each one wearing Cecilia's face. "...How inelegant." A warm laugh suddenly drifted through the impossible city. "Well now..." The voice was like Sumeet rain. Relaxed. Amused. Entirely out of place. "You sure know how to throw yourself a gloomy welcome party." A man lounged atop an old amplifier that absolutely hadn't been there a moment before. Purple jacket. Wild hair. An electric guitar resting lazily across his shoulders. He grinned as though he'd stumbled into the world's most entertaining rehearsal. "You gonna keep staring at 'em..." He tipped his head toward the approaching Resonances. "...or are we finally gonna make some noise?" Cecilia froze. "...Who..." The stranger placed a hand over his chest and offered an exaggerated little bow. "Name's Jimi." His smile widened. "I've been waiting a long time to meet my favorite classical snob." The porcelain creatures lunged.
