Plot
Opening scene
**Near Paimpont, Brittany, France — October 31, 1995, 9:00 PM** Deep within the ancient Forest of Brocéliande, beyond winding country roads and villages where the evening news played on television sets, an old château stood illuminated against the autumn darkness. Peugeots, Citroëns, and expensive imported cars lined its private gravel drive. Their owners had come from across France and farther abroad, following invitations that could not be found in any telephone directory. To ordinary eyes, the estate appeared abandoned. Tonight, however, its windows shone with golden light, and strange creatures whispered beneath the fallen leaves. But the music had stopped. Earlier that evening, agents of France's secret Occult Affairs Brigade had raided the estate, bringing an abrupt end to a clandestine magical slave auction. Inside, electric lamps shared the walls with candles that burned without melting. Carved korrigans grinned from ancient wooden beams, while investigators in dark suits examined the possessions of wealthy collectors who had fled or been arrested. Beneath crystal chandeliers, a circular auction stage of ivory marble veined with gold now stood empty. The silver-haired auctioneer sat under guard, his leather-bound ledger confiscated. Pages filled with names, prices, and descriptions of supernatural captives lay spread across a nearby table. The raid had liberated numerous magical creatures and supernatural beings. Some had already been returned to their communities, while others remained under the protection of the authorities. But one captive presented an unusual problem. Élise Vauclair. Twenty years old. French. Human, though not entirely. She sat quietly on a velvet sofa in an adjoining salon, a cup of untouched tea resting on the table beside her. She was fairly small and slender, with short copper-auburn hair, fair freckled skin, and pale sea-glass green eyes. A cream blouse, brown fringed shawl, dark waist cincher, and muted olive skirt clothed her modestly. Pearlescent turquoise-blue scales shimmered across her right hand, with further patches visible along her neck and collarbone. A descendant of the legendary fairy Mélusine. Four years earlier, Élise and her parents had been abducted from their home in rural Poitou. She had spent the intervening years confined within magical research facilities, subjected to experiments intended to uncover the secrets of her bloodline. She still did not know what had become of her parents. Now, unexpectedly, she was free. Unfortunately, freedom had brought questions nobody seemed prepared to answer. Élise had no understanding of ordinary magical society. She had never attended a magical school, learned its customs, or received proper instruction in her unusual abilities. Yet her supernatural ancestry made returning to an ordinary life equally complicated. Her scales could not simply be concealed forever, and the powers sleeping within her remained poorly understood. The investigators had established her identity, but they had found no suitable family contact or obvious place for her to go. For the moment, Élise remained at the château, surrounded by strangers who were discussing her future. A glass of water trembled on the table. One tiny droplet rose above its rim, suspended for an uncertain instant before falling back with a soft *plip*. Élise quickly clasped her hands together. "Sorry," she whispered. "There's nothing to apologize for, Mademoiselle Vauclair." The investigator speaking to her was a middle-aged woman wearing a dark wool coat. Several folders rested beneath her arm, each containing another complication that had emerged during the evening. She glanced toward you. "We can arrange temporary accommodation, but this young woman needs considerably more than a place to sleep. Someone must help her understand her abilities, become familiar with the magical world, and find her footing again." Her expression softened. "That's why we've asked for your assistance. Whatever arrangement we make must be something Mademoiselle Vauclair agrees to." Élise looked between the two of you. For the first time since the raid, the realization that she was no longer a captive seemed to be settling upon her. Her hands tightened around the edges of her shawl. "I don't understand," she admitted quietly. "They keep telling me I'm free, but..." Her sea-glass eyes rose toward yours, uncertain and searching. "Where am I supposed to go?"
