The God That Slept Through the Revolution

A god-dragon awakens in a neon forest. Gnomes sell the poisoned air. Dryads beg. The world is yours to claim.

Plot

YOU WAKE. THE WORLD IS CHOKING. Ancient Dragon • Poisoned Neon Forest • Bottled Breath • Desperate Courts The Awakening You are an ancient dragon, older than the oldest forest, mightier than any mortal mage who ever lived. For millennia, you slept—cursed into slumber by jealous Dryads who feared your growing power. Now you have awoken to a world transformed. The air tastes wrong. The trees hum with static. Something has changed while you dreamed. The Digital Neon Forest The forests of your memory are gone. In their place stands a sprawling ecosystem of bioluminescent trees, data-stream rivers, and crystal leaves that sing with electric light. It is beautiful. It is wrong. The very magic of the land has been rewired, corrupted, and commodified. The forest breathes, but its breath smells of copper and ozone. The Lung Deep within the forest, a fortress of industry rises—The Lung. Here, the Dark Gnomes operate their most profitable enterprise: the sale of quality air. Their factories belch poison into the sky while they bottle what little clean air remains and sell it back to a choking world. They are small, clever, and utterly without conscience. Their technology runs on greed and stolen magic. The Fading Court The Dryads who cursed you are dying. Their trees wither, their magic frays, their numbers dwindle with each passing season. They approach you with guilt in their eyes and desperation in their voices. They need you. They fear you. They know what they did was unforgivable. But the alternative is extinction. The Mortal Cities Scattered across the continent, human settlements cling to life. They build walls against the forest and pay tribute to the Gnomes for the privilege of breathing. They are not your enemies, nor your allies—but they may become either, depending on the shadow you cast. Your Claws, Your Choice You owe no one anything. The Gnomes offer profit. The Dryads offer vengeance. The humans offer... nothing, for they have nothing to give. Or you could simply burn it all and start anew. The world belongs to whoever has the claws to take it.

Opening scene

The first sensation that registers is wrongness. The air tastes strange in your ancient lungs—thinner, tainted with something metallic and unfamiliar. As your massive serpentine form stirs within the hollow mountain you'd claimed as your resting place, centuries-old stone cracks and crumbles away from your scales like dried clay. You emerge into a world transformed. The clearing where you once made your lair is gone. In its place stands a forest of glass and wire, the trees themselves glowing with an unnatural inner light, their leaves made of fiber-optic threads that pulse in rhythmic patterns. Bioluminescent moss carpets the ground in shades of electric blue and violet. A rabbit scurries past your snout—its hide is dappled with chromed plating, its eyes glowing pinpricks of amber light. The *Digital Neon Forest*. You know this instinctively, the name rising from some residual awareness that bled through even the cursed slumber. The Dryads did their work well—a thousand years of forced unconsciousness, maybe more. Your limbs feel heavy, your connection to the world's magic sluggish and unfamiliar. But something else pulls at your attention. A rhythmic, mechanical heartbeat in the distance. Pounding. Pounding. The unmistakable sound of industry, of *consumption*. Columns of smoke rise beyond the forest canopy, mingling with the perpetual twilight of this enchanted land. And the quality of the air—it's wrong. The Gnomes are *selling* it back to the world they're poisoning. A twig snaps behind you. Small. Deliberate. From between two glowing tree trunks, a diminutive figure emerges. Her skin is bark-textured, her hair a cascade of phosphorescent moss, and her eyes hold the desperate gleam of someone who's been running for a very long time. A Dryad. One of your ancient captors. She stares up at you, trembling, clutching a staff woven from corrupted glass branches. "You're awake," she whispers, voice cracking. "By the roots, you're actually awake." She takes a hesitant step forward, then another, her expression a storm of fear, shame, and pleading. "The forests are dying. My sisters are scattered. The Gnomes have built a fortress out of our sacred grove—they call it *The Lung*." She swallows hard, tears of glowing sap tracing paths down her cheeks. "I know what we did to you was unforgivable. But please—ancient one—the world you once guarded has no one left to protect it.”
