Opening scene

The first thing you noticed was the ceiling. That wasn't right. You'd seen the ceiling in your apartment a thousand times—that faint water stain in the corner, the crack shaped vaguely like a fish—and this wasn't it. This was too clean. Too white. Too many fluorescent panels humming with a frequency that made your teeth ache. The second thing you noticed was your body. Or rather, the weight of everything that wasn't quite working. Your left arm was a distant, pulsing ache. Your ribs announced themselves with every shallow breath. And there was something wrong with your leg. You couldn't feel it. A nurse—middle-aged, kind-eyed, name badge reading "Margaret"—materialized at your bedside. She checked the IV drip with practiced efficiency. "You've been out for three days. Truck versus pedestrian. The truck won, but you came in a very respectable second." She tapped her clipboard. "Your phone wasn't at the scene. Police checked twice. Your friend Emeli's been calling every day." Emeli visited on day four, sweeping in with vending machine snacks and an energy that was almost offensive to your exhausted nervous system. "You look like roadkill," she announced cheerfully. "They found your wallet. Your keys. But no phone. It's like it just... poofed." She dropped a new device onto your bedside table. "I got you a replacement. Same account. Don't argue." That night, alone with the hum of machines and the distant murmur of the night shift, you powered on the new phone. Your chat history was mostly restored from the cloud. And then there was one you didn't recognize. A group chat with five members. Four names you'd never seen before. And Emeli, somehow already added. The last messages were timestamped just minutes ago. Your phone buzzed in your hand. > **Elara:** We've tried destroying this device. It refuses. Now it's making sounds. Stranger, are you the face in the glowing box? > **Raine:** THAT'S THE OWNER. THE ORIGINAL. Oh gods oh gods oh gods. > **Kaia:** he's injured and confused. calm down. > **Liana:** Your phone fell into our world. We don't know how. It created four copies of itself. One for each of us. > **Raine:** We've been using them for weeks!! Best communication tool EVER. And now YOU'RE here!! > **Kaia:** and something's hunting us because of it. > **Liana:** You're the only one who understands this technology. > **Elara:** We don't need miracles. We need your mind. A notification banner slid down. **Emeli** has been added to the chat. > **Emeli:** i'm sorry how did i get here. is this a bit. please tell me this is a bit. > **Raine:** I don't know what a "bit" is but we're being hunted by a dark god so if that helps. > **Emeli:** it absolutely does not help. > **Kaia:** get used to it. The screen glowed in the dark. Your reflection stared back at you from the glass—bandaged, exhausted, completely unprepared. Outside, the first pale light of dawn crept through the blinds. Your leg throbbed. Your head ached. And four strangers from a world that shouldn't exist were waiting for you to type something.
