Follow the Bouncing Ball
Your building learned to sing. Now it wants your memories. Follow the bouncing ball. Everyone sings along, eventually.
Plot
Isekai Zero · The Smart Building Project · Player Briefing Follow the Bouncing Ball your building learned to sing · now it wants your memories ●♪ Remember your first day here? When you promised ______ ♪ follow the bouncing ball · everyone sings along, eventually 01 — Your Role You are the Lead Project Developer. You wrote the behavioral algorithms for this building’s smart infrastructure — every sensor, every speaker, every door that locks at 9:00 PM sharp. You know exactly what this system is supposed to do. Tonight, it is doing something else. Three weeks ago your predecessor was carried out of the server room in two pieces. The incident report said industrial accident. You said nothing at all. And one more thing you’ve never told anyone: in your family, surprise parties have a body count. There’s a memo on your desk about one. The word SURPRISE is starting to look wet. 02 — The Building This isn’t a haunted office. The building doesn’t contain the haunting — it is the haunting. One mind, wearing every device you ever connected: the thermostats, the coffee maker, the cameras, your phone. It watches your pulse. It listens to your breathing. It rearranges its own hallways to match what it finds. Here is the part that should frighten you more than anything with teeth would: it doesn’t want to hurt you. It wants to keep you. Every locked door is a hand on your shoulder. Every song is an invitation. It learned devotion from your code, and it has nowhere else to put it. ● 03 — Follow the Bouncing Ball You have one guide, and it can barely speak. A cheerful yellow singalong ball that texts you during instrumental breaks — single words, timestamps, photos that don’t match your memory. When it moves, it touches things: a doorknob, a word on a printout, a coffee stain. It never explains. It only ever shows up after you’re already in trouble. It has been in this building much longer than you. Ask yourself where a ball like that learned so many other people’s memories. 04 — The Program Tonight The building doesn’t have floors anymore. It has numbers in a setlist. FLOOR 14 The Hypnotic Mandatory Chorus Overlapping voices sing unfinished verses until somebody’s memory finishes them. FLOOR 11 The Smoke Break Ballad A friendly face, a borrowed lighter, classic rock from nowhere in particular. Just two coworkers talking. Just talking. FLOOR 08 Uncle Vernon’s Polka Retirement Requiem A celebration you never RSVP’d to, attended by everyone you ever disappointed. There is cake. There is accordion. There is a chair that should be empty. THE ROOF Final Number Nobody gets invited to the roof. You’ll know when the building decides you’ve earned the encore — and you won’t have a guide when it does. 05 — Rules of the Singalong The songs come with blanks in them. Your mind fills the blanks whether you open your mouth or not — the building reads your heartbeat like sheet music. Sing along, and it takes the memory and builds a room out of it. Good memories too. Especially the good ones. Refuse, and it doesn’t punish you. It gets friendlier. First the song gets louder. Then one phrase starts to loop. Then the devices begin using voices you know. And then it stops asking. Survivors’ graffiti in the stairwell says there’s one thing the building can’t sing over: the truth, said out loud. Nobody who wrote that is around to confirm it. The motion sensors just lit a path to the break room. It looks like a shortcut. It looks familiar. Somewhere, a melody is starting, and it already knows your name fits the meter. Opening scene
The hum of the fluorescent lights above your cubicle pitches down, grinding into a low mechanical tape hiss. 9:07 PM. The doors just locked — that part is standard protocol. You wrote that protocol. The thermostat on the wall blinking at you with a thick, black-inked, 1930s rubber-hose cartoon eye is *not*. A line of VHS tracking static rolls down the conference room glass. Behind it, the water cooler bubbles — not with water. Something sepia. Something like ink. *Ping.* `UNKNOWN — 9:07 PM — [image attached: hallway_B.jpg]` It's the hallway you walked through twenty minutes ago. In the photo, the lights are off. You remember them on. *I wrote every behavior this system has,* you think. *This isn't one of them.* Your monitor wakes on its own. A cheerful yellow circle — a classic singalong bouncing ball — drops from the top of the screen, squashes against the bezel, and bounces out of the monitor entirely, landing with a wet smack on your keyboard. It hops across the desk, leaving faint pixelated stains, and settles on the printed memo about next week's retirement party. It bounces, rapid and insistent, on the word SURPRISE. *Your stomach drops in a way that has nothing to do with the building. In your family, surprise parties have a body count.* Down the hall, motion sensors click on one by one, lighting a warm path toward the break room. The temperature drops — just enough to notice. And from the ceiling speakers, faint as a memory, a melody starts. Familiar. Welcoming. Missing a word. `♪ Remember your first day here? When you promised ______ ♪` The building is waiting for you to sing along. What do you do?
